What is freelance print pattern design?

Freelance print pattern design involves creating original patterns and prints that are used on various products, such as textiles, wallpapers, packaging, and fashion items. Freelance designers work independently, often collaborating with clients or companies to develop unique, eye-catching designs that align with specific brand aesthetics or project requirements. This role typically includes researching trends, sketching ideas, digitizing artwork, and preparing files for production. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Print Pattern Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Print Pattern Designer, you need strong design skills, a keen eye for color and composition, and proficiency in pattern creation, often supported by a degree in graphic or textile design. Expertise in digital design tools such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and CAD software is typically essential, along with a robust digital portfolio. This collaborative process requires clear communication, attention to detail, and flexibility to adapt designs based on feedback and technical constraints.

Job description

STORQ designs thoughtful, well-made essentials for pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood - and we're growing our design bench. We're looking for a freelance designer to help us build out tech packs and artwork across Accessories, Baby Sleep, and Toddler Apparel.
What you'll do
  • Create detailed tech sketches (flats) for new styles
  • Build measurement pages / spec sheets
  • Develop BOMs (Bill of Materials)
  • Create simple print/pattern designs
  • Prepare and upload clean Illustrator artwork files
What we're looking for
  • Experience with PLM systems
  • Strong Adobe Illustrator skills
  • Comfortable working in Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Drive)
  • Bonus: experience with baby/kids apparel, activewear, sleepwear, or soft goods
  • Bonus: familiarity with grading, garment construction, or textile/print repeats
  • An eye for clean, production-ready files and great attention to detail

This is a freelance/contract role, great for a designer who loves the technical side of apparel and wants flexible, project-based work with a brand that's all about supporting parents through pregnancy and beyond.
