Search & ComparisonOften compared for freelance opportunities and project scopeCompared for full-time roles and team collaboration

Freelance Print Designers typically work independently on print projects for diverse clients, focusing on specific print media. Graphic Designers may work in agencies or in-house teams, handling both print and digital projects. While both roles require strong design skills and portfolios, Freelance Print Designers prioritize project-based work, whereas Graphic Designers often work within organizational structures.

What is freelance print design?

Freelance print design involves creating visual materials intended for printing, such as brochures, posters, business cards, and packaging, on a project-by-project basis rather than as a full-time employee. Freelance print designers typically work independently with clients to understand their needs, develop concepts, and deliver print-ready artwork. This role requires strong graphic design skills, knowledge of print production processes, and proficiency with design software like Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Freelancers must also manage their own business operations, including client communication, invoicing, and meeting deadlines.

What are some common challenges freelance print designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Freelance print designers often juggle several projects at once, which can make time management and organization challenging. Balancing client deadlines, revisions, and varying project scopes requires strong communication and excellent workflow planning. Many designers use project management tools and clear client contracts to stay on track and avoid scope creep. Learning to set realistic timelines and prioritize tasks is essential for maintaining quality and meeting client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Print Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Print Designer, you need a strong grasp of graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and experience with print production processes, often supported by a relevant degree or portfolio. Mastery of design software such as Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, as well as knowledge of print specifications and file preparation, is essential. Exceptional communication, time management, and client collaboration skills enable you to understand client needs and deliver projects efficiently. These skills ensure high-quality, visually compelling print materials that meet client expectations and industry standards.

About the Walmart Brands Design Team
At Walmart, we help people save money so they can live better. This mission serves as the foundation for every decision we make to create the future of retail — from responsible sourcing to sustainability, democratized design, and everything in between.
We are a multifaceted team of brand ambassadors, collection builders, assortment curators, color enthusiasts, trend experts, and illustrators at the forefront of an organizational shift toward a design- and style-led Walmart Brands portfolio. Small but mighty, we seek design partners who bring fresh perspectives, new thinking, collaboration, and design excellence to our team.

About the Role
Walmart is seeking a Senior Manager for the Seasonal Print & Pattern design team across key holiday moments—owning print/pattern direction for major seasonal tentpoles and a curated set of culturally relevant moments. This role sets holiday-specific trend and color direction, builds scalable print/pattern toolkits, and partners closely with Editorial and cross-functional teams to bring stories to life across multiple SBUs. You’ll create and oversee print/pattern & illustration execution for Private Brands, ensuring design intent, brand DNA, quality, and value align to customer needs. What you'll do...Seasonal Print & Pattern Direction
  • Establish print/pattern vision and creative direction for seasonal celebrations across multiple SBUs (e.g., Home, Fashion, Beauty, Kids, GM).
  • Translate trend insights into holiday-specific pattern languages (whimsical to contemporary) and scalable design systems.
  • Build seasonal print/pattern libraries and toolkits (motifs, repeats, placement art, pattern scales, colorways) that teams can execute consistently.
  • Illustrate icons and illustrations to build into print pattern and share across teams for seasonal cohesion

Trend, Color, and Holiday POV
  • Seasonal print trend strategies that support Private Brand goals and seasonal storytelling.
  • Drive holiday color direction in partnership with color leadership—develop palettes by holiday, manage the home color library, and ensure accessibility and production readiness.

Creative Design & Artwork Development
  • Create original artwork, patterns and illustration using both digital tools (AI, adobe suite ect) and traditional methods.
  • Modify and elevate purchased artwork to align with seasonal narratives and brand standards; source artwork from vendors/print houses and marketplaces as needed.
  • Ensure patterns flex across soft home and can translate to hard home applications when needed.
  • Develop print pattern systems to execute across soft & hard substrates

Technical Print Excellence (Production-Ready)
  • Create seamless repeats and production-ready, color-separated files using Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator (vector and TIFF).
  • Apply expert judgment on scale, repeat, and layout across product categories (bedding, window, pillows, etc.).
  • Maintain strong file hygiene: naming conventions, accurate callouts, measurements, and organized structures.
  • Demonstrate deep knowledge adapting prints across substrates and material types.

Editorial Partnership & Storytelling
  • Partner with editorial/content teams to translate seasonal story arcs into print/pattern worlds that support multi-channel storytelling.
  • Develop print/pattern frameworks that ladder to campaign narratives and can scale across PDP, site experiences, social, and seasonal content.

Leadership & Collaboration
  • Collaborate cross-functionally (Design, Merch, Product Development, Sourcing, Brand, Marketing, Editorial) to align creative with business objectives.
  • Provide clear creative feedback, set quality bars, and coach designers/CAD artists; manage workload across multiple seasonal timelines.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously and oversee freelance support (up to two freelancers, plus external partners as needed).
What You’ll Bring...
  • 4+ years in print/pattern, textile, or surface design (home and/or fashion), with experience leading seasonal/holiday workstreams.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating seasonal print/pattern direction, repeat design, color systems, and product translation through an elevated taste level lens.
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud; proven ability to deliver technically correct production files.
  • Strong understanding of the print development process and quality standards.
  • Strong color sensibility and experience collaborating on seasonal palettes and color libraries.
  • Ability to analyze competition and trends; comfortable using insights to guide creative strategy.
  • Knowledge of copyright considerations related to graphics and pattern manipulation.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort influencing across partners and SBUs.
  • Experience with AI design tools and/or large-format plotter printing workflows.
  • Experience building scalable toolkits for large retail organizations and multiple SBUs.
