What is freelance newsletter design?

Freelance newsletter design involves creating visually appealing and effective email newsletters for clients on a project or contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Designers use tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or email marketing platforms to craft layouts, choose color schemes, and incorporate branding elements that engage readers. Freelance newsletter designers often work with businesses, organizations, or individuals to communicate news, promotions, or updates to subscribers. Their responsibilities can include both the graphic design aspect and sometimes the coding of responsive email templates. The goal is to help clients enhance their communication and marketing efforts through professional email design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance newsletter designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Newsletter Designer, you need expertise in graphic design principles, email marketing best practices, and proficiency with layout and typography. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and email platforms (such as Mailchimp or Constant Contact) is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and time management skills set standout designers apart in this role. These abilities ensure visually engaging, effective newsletters that meet client goals and foster audience engagement.

How do freelance newsletter designers typically collaborate with clients and other team members during a project?

Freelance newsletter designers often work closely with clients, marketing teams, and content creators to ensure the final product aligns with brand guidelines and messaging goals. Communication is usually handled through emails, video calls, and project management tools to review drafts and gather feedback. Designers may also coordinate with copywriters and developers to integrate content and ensure optimal email deliverability. This collaborative approach helps ensure newsletters are visually appealing, effective, and meet the client's objectives.

Senior Content Marketer

Mercury

San Francisco, CA โ€ข On-site, Remote

Full-time

Posted 22 days ago

Job description

In 1968, Stewart Brand published the Whole Earth Catalog - a now-iconic publication that inspired generations of builders to think differently about what they could create. Decades later, Steve Jobs would call it "one of the bibles of my generation."
We're not trying to recreate Brand's work, but it's a great reminder that the best content doesn't just answer questions - it expands how people think, build, and solve problems.
Mercury's Stories team is hiring a Senior Content Marketer to help shape and grow exceptional educational and informational content for founders and entrepreneurs - people building companies, navigating uncertainty, and trying to make better decisions every day.
In this role, you'll drive the day-to-day operation of Mercury's educational blog, partnering closely with product marketers, SEO, communications, creatives, and others to continually uplift its quality, reach, and business impact. You'll develop content and distribution opportunities, edit and publish excellent work, think outside the box, and improve the systems that help our content program scale. This is a senior individual contributor role.
We're looking for more than a great writer and editor (though you should be that, too!). We're excited for an exceptional builder-operator who combines strong editorial judgment with a marketer's instinct for audience, distribution, and impact, plus a genuine curiosity about our audience.
If this sounds like you...
  • A sharp writer and editor with a knack for turning complex topics into content people actually want to read and engage with.
  • An audience-first marketer who balances creativity, craft, and data to make smart and high-impact decisions.
  • Deeply curious about business, entrepreneurship, finance, and what founders and builders need to successfully build and operate ambitious companies.
  • Always learning, whether it's new technologies, evolving media formats, or how audiences discover information.
  • Comfortable bringing clarity to ambiguity, collaborating across disciplines, and raising the quality of the work around you.
  • A self-directed program-builder who thrives in remote-first, async environments and brings structure and scalability to shared work...

...then read on.
In this role, you will:
  • Manage the day-to-day operation of Mercury's educational blog, from content planning through assignment, editing, publishing, and ongoing optimization.
  • Write, edit, and package exceptional, performant content across blogs, newsletters, campaigns, and other strategic initiatives.
  • Manage freelancers and agency partners with thoughtful stewardship and grace to help scale the work while meeting or surpassing the quality bar
  • Partner with SEO/AEO, Product Marketing, Communications, Design, and other teams to identify opportunities and maximize the reach and impact of our content.
  • Proactively use performance data and audience insights to identify growth strategies, improve content performance, and help the team make smarter editorial investments.
  • Leverage AI and modern content tools to improve research, editing, and production workflows.
You have:
  • 8+ years working in content marketing, content strategy, editorial, or a related field.
  • An exceptional writer and editor, with a track record of elevating the work of other writers through thoughtful feedback and high editorial standards.
  • Proven success leading a blog, newsletter, publication, or similarly scaled editorial program.
  • Comfortable managing freelancers, agencies, and other external contributors to deliver high-quality work at scale.
  • A solid command of business, entrepreneurship, finance, or similar subject matter, with the ability to make it engaging and accessible.
  • Strong editorial judgment paired with a thoughtful marketing mindset - you care as much about who sees the work as the quality of the work itself.

Please submit your portfolio or work samples, as well as a short cover letter with your application. Applications without work samples and a cover letter will not be considered.
Compensation:
The total rewards package at Mercury includes base salary, equity (stock options/RSUs), and benefits.
Our salary and equity ranges are highly competitive within the SaaS and fintech industry and are updated regularly using the most reliable compensation survey data for our industry.
