Description

SAIC is seeking a motivated and highly skilled Mechanical Engineer to join our team focused on the design, development, and deployment of innovative maritime off-board countermeasure systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to developing advanced mechanical systems that protect naval vessels from threats.

The successful candidate will be a creative problem-solver, applying a strong mechanical engineering foundation to support the system lifecycle, from concept development to production and delivery. Knowledge or experience in maritime domain systems and/or countermeasure technologies is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams (engineers, designers, and analysts) to design, develop, and test mechanical systems and components for maritime countermeasure technologies.
  2. Participate in all phases of the product lifecycle, including requirements analysis, system design, fabrication, testing, and product improvement.
  3. Conduct structural, thermal, and fluid dynamic analyses to validate designs and ensure performance requirements are met.
  4. Design for harsh, dynamic, and maritime operational environments, considering factors such as corrosion resistance, water pressure, and reliability.
  5. Engage in hands-on integration, troubleshooting, and performance optimization of mechanical components and systems in both lab and field environments.
  6. Prepare detailed documentation, including drawings, technical reports, manufacturing instructions, and test specifications ensuring compliance with industry standards (MIL-STD, ASME).
  7. Collaborate with suppliers/manufacturers to oversee prototyping and production processes, ensuring on-time and on-budget delivery.
  8. Stay informed about emerging trends in maritime defense technology and innovation.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3–5 years of hands-on experience in mechanical design, analysis, and testing.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Siemens NX, Creo) and finite element analysis (FEA) tools (e.g., ANSYS, Abaqus).
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to analyze complex systems.
  • Understanding of material selection for environments exposed to seawater, high loads, and dynamic conditions.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, or additive manufacturing processes.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, enabling collaboration across technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with maritime defense or off-board countermeasure systems (e.g., torpedo defense, decoys, anti-air/anti-surface systems).
  • Background or experience with MIL-STD or related testing requirements for the defense industry.
  • Understanding of systems engineering principles and integration processes in maritime environments.
  • Exposure to hydrodynamic systems, buoyancy-driven devices, or marine vehicle/structure design.
  • Hands-on experience in designing for dynamic and shock-tested applications (e.g., MIL-S-901).
  • Active or ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.
  • Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
