As of Sep 1, 2026, the average hourly pay for freelance garment pattern making in Keyport, NJ is $49.26, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $25.05 and $63.80 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is freelance garment pattern making?

Freelance garment pattern making involves creating templates or blueprints for clothing items on a project-by-project basis, rather than working for a single employer. Pattern makers interpret designers' sketches and technical specifications to produce precise digital or paper patterns that guide fabric cutting and garment construction. Freelancers in this field may work with fashion brands, independent designers, or manufacturers to develop new styles or refine existing ones. This role requires technical expertise in pattern drafting, knowledge of garment construction, and often proficiency with specialized software such as CAD. Freelance pattern makers enjoy flexibility in their work but must also manage their own schedules, client relationships, and business operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance garment pattern maker?

To thrive as a Freelance Garment Pattern Maker, you need strong skills in pattern drafting, garment construction, and an understanding of textiles, supported by experience or formal training in fashion design or pattern making. Proficiency with CAD software like Gerber or Lectra, as well as manual pattern drafting tools, is often required. Attention to detail, creativity, and clear communication with clients or manufacturers are essential soft skills. These abilities ensure the accurate translation of design concepts into production-ready patterns, leading to successful garment creation and client satisfaction.

What are some common challenges freelance garment pattern makers face when working with remote clients?

Freelance garment pattern makers often encounter challenges when collaborating with remote clients, such as ensuring clear communication about design specifications and managing accurate measurements without in-person fittings. Additionally, aligning expectations regarding fabric behavior and construction details can be tricky without direct access to materials. To address these issues, pattern makers typically rely on detailed tech packs, frequent video calls, and digital pattern-sharing platforms to keep projects on track and minimize revisions.

Job description

Technical Designer (Freelance)

Manufacturer of premium leather & sheepskin outerwear seeking a freelance Technical Designer for men’s & women’s tops, bottoms / RTW.

You will convert design intent into production-ready garments that deliver consistent fit, durability, and luxury hand-feel, protecting the quality customers expect and keeping the factories running on time.

Performance Objectives

·        Create complete, graded tech packs (specs, construction, BOM, stitch details) for 8–12 styles per season so first samples meet 90% of fit and construction targets.

·        Lead virtual and physical fittings, documenting revisions that cut sampling rounds by at least 30% versus prior seasons.

·        Resolve factory technical queries within 48 hours to prevent line stoppages in leather and sheepskin programs.

·        Maintain and update CAD pattern libraries so every SKU remains production-ready and size-consistent.

·        Flag material and construction constraints early so designs stay manufacturable without sacrificing the aesthetic.

You report to the Head of Design and work remotely with scheduled access to our sample room. Tools include Gerber or Lectra CAD, Excel, and Adobe Illustrator. You will partner directly with overseas factories and our in-house pattern and merchandising teams on a project-based freelance schedule.

Qualifications

·        5+ years of technical design experience

·        Proven ability to produce factory-ready tech packs that reduce sampling cycles.

·        Advanced CAD pattern-making skills (Gerber, Lectra, or equivalent) and grading expertise.

·        Hands-on knowledge of leather properties, shrinkage, and construction limitations.

·        Clear, concise communication with overseas production teams.

·        $45 per hour, 2- 3 week freelance role starting after Labor Day Weekend 2026
