They work with various technologies, including databases, servers, APIs, and client-side interfaces, to create fully functional digital products. Unlike full-time employees, freelancers work on a project basis for multiple clients, offering flexibility in workload and schedule. Their responsibilities often include coding, debugging, deployment, and sometimes design.

What types of projects and clients can freelance full stack developers typically expect to work with?

Freelance Full Stack Developers often engage with a diverse range of projects, including website and web application development, e-commerce platforms, mobile app backends, and API integrations. Clients can range from startups and small businesses to established companies and entrepreneurs seeking bespoke digital solutions. The variety in clients and project scopes allows developers to constantly expand their skills and work experience, but it also means adapting quickly to new industries and client expectations. Freelancers typically manage their own workflow, communicate directly with clients, and are responsible for project timelines, making this role ideal for self-motivated technology professionals.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance full stack developer?

To thrive as a Freelance Full Stack Developer, you need a solid grasp of both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Node.js, Python, or similar) and a strong portfolio showcasing completed projects. Familiarity with frameworks like React or Angular, version control systems like Git, cloud services, and sometimes relevant certifications (such as AWS Certified Developer) are highly valued. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, time management, and client relationship skills help set freelancers apart. These competencies are crucial for effectively delivering end-to-end solutions, managing multiple projects, and building a reliable client base.

Job description

Open to hiring in our west (Grand Rapids), east (Southfield), or South (St. Joseph) regions. Must be able to work onsite one day per week at closest corporate office.

Job Summary

The Hybrid Cloud System Architect is a strategic, full-stack hands-on architecture role responsible for designing, guiding implementation of, and continuously optimizing an integrated hybrid infrastructure platform spanning public cloud and on-premises data center environments. The role provides technical leadership across compute, storage, networking, automation, resilience, security, and observability, ensuring that workloads are placed and operated according to business, performance, availability, compliance, risk, and cost requirements. Unlike a cloud engineering role with incidental responsibility for on-premises infrastructure, this position intentionally unifies cloud and data center architecture as a single platform capability. This is a full-time position embedded within CPO/Platform Engineering and reporting to infrastructure leadership.

Essential Functions
  • Unified infrastructure design- architects compute, storage, and networking solutions that treat on-premises data center and cloud as integrated platforms rather than separate silos.
  • Hybrid workload orchestration- determines which workloads run where (cloud vs. data center) based on cost, latency, compliance, and performance requirements, design data flows between environments.
  • SLA-based operations- defines and operationalizes service level agreements spanning both environments, moving from "manage hardware" to "deliver business outcomes.
  • Cost and capacity optimization- manages consumption models, avoids cloud waste, and plans data center refresh cycles strategically across the hybrid environment.
  • Compliance and cyber resilience- enforces HIPAA-compliant data residency, encryption, and security controls consistently across cloud and data centerThis role isembedded in cloud platform operations (CPO) teams, not in the CCOE. The CCOE sets governance, but this architect executes and optimizes the hybrid platform.
  • Maintains capability roadmaps.
Soft Skills
  • Cross-functional collaboration - work with cloud engineers, database architects, security, and clinical IT teams to align hybrid decisions
  • Business acumen - understand workload economics, risk trade-offs, and how to present hybrid decisions to leadership
  • Change leadership - managing the cultural shift from siloed infrastructure (storage team, networking team, cloud team) to unified hybrid operations
  • Adaptability - cloud and storage technologies evolve rapidly; continuous learning is non-negotiable
  • Systems Thinking: Ability to understand interdependencies across applications, infrastructure, security, operations, and business processes.
  • Influencing Without Authority: Ability to drive architectural outcomes across multiple teams without direct management responsibility.
  • Decision Making Under Ambiguity: Ability to make informed architectural recommendations with incomplete information while balancing risk, cost, speed, and operational complexity.
  • Mentoring & Technical Leadership: Coach engineers and architects on hybrid-cloud patterns, standards, and best practices.
Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience
  • Extensive experience designing and supporting enterprise infrastructure solutions across both cloud and on-premises environments.
  • Strong expertise in AWS and/or Azure, including compute, storage, networking, security, governance, and cost optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Broad knowledge of data center technologies, including virtualization, storage systems (SAN/NAS), backup and disaster recovery, high availability, and enterprise networking.
  • Experience architecting and supporting hybrid cloud environments, including cloud-to-data-center connectivity, data mobility, storage, and workload portability.
  • Familiarity with container technologies, cloud-native platforms, and emerging automation capabilities, including AI-driven infrastructure management.
  • Strong understanding of security, compliance, and risk management, including zero-trust principles, HIPAA requirements, cybersecurity best practices, and resiliency planning.
  • Experience implementing automation, configuration management, and operational efficiency initiatives at scale.
  • Knowledge of cloud financial management (FinOps), including cost monitoring and optimization strategies.
  • Proficiency with Git-based version control and collaborative engineering workflows.

Preferred

  • Master's Degree or equivalent
  • Proven experience designing and supporting hybrid environments
  • Track record in healthcare IT or other regulated industries
  • Certifications: AWS certified solution architect, Google professional cloud architect or Azure solutions architect expert
  • Experience using any of the tools listed below:
    • Python
    • PowerShell
    • Rundeck
    • Spacelift
    • GitHub and GitHub Actions
    • CI/CD pipeline design, implementation, and support
    • AI Coding assistance
    • Kubernetes/EKS
    • DevSecOps
