Job description

Job Summary

The Chemical Sensors Lab in the Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering Department is currently searching for an Optics Engineer to work with a cross-disciplinary team focused on developing sensors and instrumentation for ocean and environmental applications. This position is specifically related to interferometric sensor development. Significant duties include designing, prototyping, testing, and characterizing the sensor system on the lab bench, and leading optical design tasks and experimentation. A strong understanding of optical interferometry and familiarity with fiber optics is required. Strong technical skills and ability to document engineering designs are required.

Job Description

This is an early to mid-career level position for someone who has previously demonstrated the ability to build and test optical sensors or systems. Initially, this position will have direct supervision to achieve structured and assigned objectives and is expected to later expand to broader and more independent tasks. The candidate will be expected to work on tasks requiring creativity and independent thinking, along with a proven understanding of fundamental research and engineering principles. The candidate will have expertise in optics through either a recognized degree or through experience at a previous engineering position.

The internal working title for this position will be Engineer I or Engineer II

Essential Functions & Duties

Example:

Design a sensor system based on the principles of optical interferometry.

Selects light sources and detectors.

Selects fiber optic components. Tests and evaluates their performance.

Selects optical materials based on their thermal, mechanical, and optical properties.

Designs opto-mechanical hardware for the sensor system.

Sets up and utilizes instrument control and data acquisition systems.

Performs sensor bench testing, calibration, and characterization.

Simulates optical signals using Matlab or Python.

Processes optical signal data using Matlab or Python.

A versatile skillset with aspects of electrical engineering or mechanical engineering is beneficial.

Required Experience & Education

Degree in an engineering discipline with demonstrated experience in the field of optics, particularly optical interferometry or fiber optics.

Salary Range:

Engineer I: $70,963 - $91,796

Engineer II: $89,408 - $116,127

The salary range provided for this position reflects the expected minimum and maximum base pay for new hires. Actual level placement and compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base salary, eligible employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package.

Shipboard environment mayinclude:confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixedmeal timesand basic menus. Modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loudnoises, andslippery and uneven surfaces.

Travel

May berequiredto travel for fieldwork. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories.
