What is freelance feature writing?

Freelance feature writing involves independently creating in-depth, narrative-driven articles for magazines, newspapers, websites, or other publications. Unlike news articles, features usually explore topics in detail, often focusing on human interest, trends, or investigative stories. Freelance feature writers pitch their ideas to editors, conduct research and interviews, and are paid per piece rather than being on staff. This career offers flexibility and variety but requires strong writing skills, self-motivation, and the ability to meet deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance feature writer?

To thrive as a Freelance Feature Writer, you need strong research abilities, excellent storytelling skills, and proficiency in grammar and AP or other relevant style guides, often supported by a portfolio of published work. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically required. Creativity, persistence, and the ability to communicate professionally with editors and sources are key soft skills that set successful writers apart. These skills ensure the production of engaging, accurate, and marketable content that meets editorial standards and deadlines.

What are some common challenges freelance feature writers face when working with multiple editors or publications?

Freelance feature writers often juggle assignments from various editors, each with their own style, expectations, and editorial processes. This can lead to challenges such as adapting to different voice and tone guidelines, managing overlapping deadlines, and negotiating contracts or payment terms. Building strong communication skills and maintaining organized tracking systems for pitches, drafts, and payments can help writers navigate these complexities and foster positive relationships with multiple clients.

Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Product Manager - Media based in Netherlands.

This role gives you ownership of a high-impact media product program within an innovative Generative AI advertising environment.
You will turn contractual requirements into a clear, sequenced product backlog and drive delivery against demanding milestones.
Your scope will span product development, media workflows, data and platform dependencies, design, and enterprise pilot readiness.
You will ensure the product reflects the real-world needs of media practitioners, from campaign planning and trafficking to platform activation and optimization.
The role combines hands-on product management with strong stakeholder coordination across internal teams and external partners.
You will work in a fast-moving, remote-first environment where clear writing, pragmatic prioritization, and early risk management are essential.
This is a permanent position where the initial delivery program is your first major mission, with opportunities to shape the product well beyond its launch phase.

Accountabilities
  • Own and maintain the product backlog, ensuring every feature is framed around a clear functional outcome with precise, signable acceptance criteria before development begins.
  • Translate contractual scope and business requirements into a sequenced backlog that provides clarity for the development team and stakeholders.
  • Plan and coordinate a 3-4 month product build in partnership with the technical lead, managing dependencies across the wider media product environment, including data, agent, and platform capabilities.
  • Coordinate delivery against dependencies involving external data APIs and internal teams whose products or surfaces connect with the solution.
  • Run a structured milestone cadence with program stakeholders, communicating what is shipping, what is at risk, and what needs to be descoped clearly and early.
  • Own the product design track, briefing and coordinating freelance design support while ensuring design work remains focused on the MVP's highest-value surfaces.
  • Prepare the product for its first enterprise pilots, including onboarding flows, operational playbooks, and collaboration with specialist users.
  • Develop a measurement approach capable of demonstrating product impact and communicating meaningful outcomes from the pilot.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of media practitioners' workflows and ensure product decisions reflect how campaigns are planned, trafficked, activated, and optimized in real-world environments.
  • Work closely with engineering, strategy, media specialists, partner teams, and other stakeholders to resolve dependencies and keep delivery aligned with user and business needs.
  • Surface delivery risks, dependencies, and scope decisions proactively rather than allowing issues to impact milestones unexpectedly.
  • Measure success through milestone delivery, backlog and acceptance-criteria quality, and readiness of enterprise clients for successful pilot adoption.
Requirements
  • 3+ years of Product Management experience working on technical products such as platforms, APIs, data products, AI products, or comparable technology solutions.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in or close to paid media, advertising platforms, commerce or retail media, ideally from an agency, brand, publisher, or AdTech environment.
  • Strong understanding of media practitioners' workflows, with the ability to discuss campaign planning, trafficking, advertising platforms, creative and product data flows, and media recommendations using industry terminology.
  • Proven experience delivering products against fixed milestones while managing external stakeholders, enterprise commitments, client requirements, or contractual scope.
  • Exceptional product-writing skills, particularly in creating precise tickets, functional requirements, acceptance criteria, milestone updates, and other delivery documentation.
  • Strong ability to structure complex requirements into clear, actionable product backlogs and prioritize work according to business and user impact.
  • Comfortable working closely with technical leads and understanding dependencies across data, APIs, AI, platform infrastructure, and connected product surfaces.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and communication skills, with the ability to keep multiple teams aligned around scope, risks, priorities, and delivery expectations.
  • Highly pragmatic and accountable, with a preference for making difficult scope decisions early and communicating them transparently.
  • Strong attention to detail and a commitment to ensuring that every ticket has a clear purpose, outcome, and definition of success.
  • Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, distributed environment with a high degree of autonomy and ownership.
  • Based in Europe and available to work within CET working hours.
  • Experience with LLM products and evaluation, partner-agency squads, or both agency-side and brand-side media environments is a plus.
  • A strong interest in Generative AI and its application to advertising, media, and creative workflows is advantageous.
Benefits
  • Permanent position with the opportunity to take ownership of a strategic product beyond the initial delivery program.
  • Fully remote working model across Europe.
  • Opportunity to work at the intersection of Generative AI, advertising technology, media, data, and enterprise software.
  • High level of product ownership and direct influence over roadmap, delivery, and pilot outcomes.
  • Fast-moving environment offering significant opportunities for learning, experimentation, and professional growth.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with experienced specialists across product, engineering, media, strategy, data, and design.
  • Exposure to enterprise clients and real-world media use cases with measurable business impact.
  • Culture focused on innovation, practical problem-solving, clear communication, and meaningful product outcomes.
