Senior Director, Business & Industry – San Francisco, CA

Overview

Lead our Business coverage, overseeing 10+ reporters and editors across US and UK teams. Work with senior leadership to develop editorial strategies, drive coverage of tech companies, personalities, events, and manage budget, freelance roster, audience development, and digital video collaboration.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Conceive, pitch, and develop content strategy for the Business section.
  • Work with senior leadership to set goals and priorities aligned with brand objectives.
  • Seek out diverse voices to deliver differentiated coverage.
  • Partner with audience development to review engagement KPIs and refine strategy.
  • Manage all projects from concept to execution: assignments, editing, budgeting, visuals, fact-checking, production, and social/video partnership.
  • Meet section KPIs (productivity, UPVs, engagement, time spent, etc.).
  • Collaborate with global markets on relevant stories.
  • Lead, mentor, and manage editors and reporters in the US and UK: hiring, talent development, performance management, processes, communication, feedback, inclusive environment.
  • Contribute to brand extensions, social platforms, and additional projects.
  • Represent the brand publicly: social media, press, panels, speaking engagements, internal presentations.
  • Additional projects or stories as assigned.
Desired Qualifications
  • 10+ years experience as an editor in fast‑paced, digital, news‑driven environment; 5+ years managing staff.
  • Track record of covering the tech industry with breaking news and strong sourcing.
  • Experience overseeing multi‑platform content from ideation to execution.
  • Passion for ambitious coverage, especially Big Tech, AI, and core focus areas.
  • Skilled at helping editors and writers craft stories for maximum impact.
  • Highly collaborative, with excellent communication skills across diverse teams.
  • Exceptional time management and prioritization.

Expected base salary range: $145,000–$225,000.
