What does a freelance embedded system software engineer do?

A Freelance Embedded System Software Engineer designs, develops, and tests software that runs on embedded systems, which are specialized computing systems within larger devices like cars, appliances, or industrial machines. They typically work independently or on a contract basis, collaborating with clients to understand requirements and deliver customized software solutions. Their responsibilities often include writing low-level code, optimizing for performance and memory usage, and troubleshooting hardware-software integration issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance embedded system software engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Embedded System Software Engineer, you need a solid background in embedded C/C++ programming, microcontroller architecture, and real-time operating systems, often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or computer science. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems (like Git), and development platforms such as ARM, AVR, or PIC is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, self-motivation, and clear client communication help freelancers stand out in this role. These competencies ensure reliable, efficient solutions and successful project delivery in dynamic and client-driven environments.

How do freelance embedded system software engineers typically manage project scope and communication with clients?

Freelance embedded system software engineers often work independently or as part of small remote teams, making clear communication and project scope management essential. They regularly use project management tools and set milestones to clarify deliverables and timelines with clients. Addressing technical constraints and hardware integration challenges early in the process helps avoid misunderstandings. Frequent status updates and transparent discussions about changes or obstacles ensure projects stay on track and meet client expectations.

What is the difference between Freelance Embedded System Software Engineer vs Embedded Firmware Developer?

AspectFreelance Embedded System Software EngineerEmbedded Firmware Developer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or related fields; certifications are optionalSimilar educational background; certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer can be advantageous
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based work often remote; collaborates with multiple clientsUsually employed by a company or works on in-house projects; may work on-site or remotely
Industry UsageUsed across various industries including IoT, automotive, consumer electronicsPrimarily in product development, consumer electronics, automotive, and industrial systems

Both roles require embedded programming skills and knowledge of hardware. Job description

Job Description Summary

Have you ever wondered what makes today’s most advanced aviation systems so capable? Some people point to the sensors, networks, or processors. On my team we believe it’s the logic and software that stitch all of those elements together into a cohesive operating system – one that can readily respond to pilot and mission needs while still delivering safe, reliable, and efficient performance across the fleet. That same software foundation also enables diagnostic, prognostic, and connectivity capabilities to better support our customers’ mission readiness. In this role, we design, develop, integrate, and lead software solutions for advanced aerospace applications, from embedded platforms on the vehicle to supporting tools and infrastructure. Work ranges from early technology development through New Product Introduction (NPI) and fielded product support, with direct impact on safety, mission effectiveness, and lifecycle cost. If you have a passion for leading teams that deliver integrated hardware and software solutions, owning software architecture and execution, and partnering across disciplines, I’d encourage you to come check out some of the really interesting projects that we are delivering.

Roles and Responsibilities

Identify, develop, evaluate, introduce, and manage software engineering solutions for complex aerospace systems, with emphasis on safety‑critical and high‑reliability applications. Apply software engineering best practices and (where applicable) control and systems engineering principles to design software with predictable, verifiable behavior across a range of operating conditions. Serve as the software technical lead for assigned products or features, including requirements definition, architecture, detailed design, integration strategy, verification, and issue resolution. Define and drive software architectures, interfaces, and design patterns that enable modularity, reuse, and robust integration with hardware, controls, and systems. Lead planning and execution of software development activities, including estimates, schedules, risk assessments, and technical reviews, ensuring alignment with program objectives. Promote and enforce modern software practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, static analysis, code review, configuration management, and secure coding. Broadly deepen and extend knowledge of relevant software technologies (for example real‑time embedded systems, model‑based development, data processing, connectivity, or cyber considerations). Develop a solid understanding of key business drivers and program priorities; use this understanding to make sound technical tradeoffs that support Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost objectives. Collaborate closely with systems engineering, controls, hardware, verification, and program leadership to ensure the software solution integrates correctly into the overall system. Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects and tasks, consistent with engineering policies, procedures, and applicable standards or certification needs. Participate as a key presenter or reviewer in technical, design, and program reviews; lead closure of significant software‑related actions. Provide day‑to‑day technical leadership and mentoring for less experienced software engineers to help develop their design, implementation, and verification skills.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in software engineering for complex systems.
  • Successful candidate must obtain and maintain U.S. Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
Desired Characteristics
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical software and system concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience leading software development for real‑time embedded systems, avionics, or other high‑reliability domains.
  • Familiarity with model‑based development environments (for example MATLAB/Simulink or similar) and integration of auto‑generated code into embedded platforms is a plus where applicable.
  • Experience with or exposure to aerospace or other safety‑related software standards (for example DO‑178C, ARP4754A, ISO26262, or equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a structured team environment, partnering effectively with systems, controls, hardware, test, and program management.
  • Passion for developing robust, maintainable software, including practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, code quality metrics, and secure coding.
  • Experience coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers, including support through design reviews, code reviews, and day‑to‑day technical guidance.
  • Intrigued to work in an environment and on projects that cannot necessarily be broadly shared, and comfortable operating within appropriate security and information‑handling constraints.
  • Demonstrated experience acting as a technical lead for software on a product, subsystem, or major feature, including responsibility across the full development life cycle.
  • Proficiency in one or more relevant programming languages (for example C/C++, Python, or similar), and experience with associated development environments and tools.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, integrating, and testing production software, and working with real‑time, embedded, or safety/mission‑critical systems (e.g., aerospace, defense, automotive, or industrial).
Salary and Benefits

Base pay range: $109,250.00 – $146,050.00. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/commission based on the plan.

Benefits include: healthcare benefits (medical, dental, vision, and prescription drug coverage; Health Coach and Employee Assistance Program); retirement benefits (GE Aerospace Retirement Savings Plan, 401(k) with company matching and retirement contributions, access to Fidelity resources and planning consultants); tuition assistance; adoption assistance; paid parental leave; disability insurance; life insurance; paid time‑off for vacation or illness.

Security and Legal

This role requires access to U.S. export‑controlled information. Therefore, employment will be contingent upon the ability to prove that you meet the status of a U.S. Person as one of the following: U.S. lawful permanent resident, U.S. Citizen, or have been granted asylee or refugee status (i.e., a protected individual under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C.1324b(a)(3)).
