What does a freelance electrical transformer design engineer do?

A Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineer specializes in designing and developing electrical transformers for various applications, such as power distribution, industrial machinery, or renewable energy systems. They work independently or on a contract basis, collaborating with clients to understand requirements, create detailed schematics, select appropriate materials, and ensure compliance with industry standards. Their work often includes performing calculations, simulations, and testing to ensure transformer efficiency, safety, and reliability. Freelancers in this role may also assist with troubleshooting, prototyping, and providing technical documentation for manufacturing and installation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance electrical transformer design engineer?

A Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineer needs a solid background in electrical engineering principles, transformer design, and relevant industry standards, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in electrical engineering. Proficiency with CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), simulation tools (like ANSYS or PSCAD), and knowledge of IEC or IEEE standards are essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help manage client expectations and project deliverables. These competencies ensure the engineer can deliver safe, efficient, and reliable transformer designs that meet client specifications and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges freelance electrical transformer design engineers face when working with clients remotely?

Freelance Electrical Transformer Design Engineers often encounter challenges such as aligning technical specifications with diverse client requirements, managing project timelines across different time zones, and ensuring clear communication despite not being onsite. Job description

AWC is a leading provider of industrial automation, power systems, and control solutions serving customers throughout the United States. As an employee-owned (ESOP) company, we partner with many of the world’s leading manufacturers to deliver engineered solutions for the industrial, marine, utility, manufacturing, energy, data center, and critical infrastructure markets.

We are making a strategic investment in expanding our in-house power systems manufacturing capabilities and we are seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to help build the next generation of our low-voltage power systems business.

The Electrical Design Engineer will be responsible for engineering complete MCC lineups, replacement buckets, retrofit assemblies, and standardized designs that support AWC’s growing manufacturing operation. Working closely with customers, manufacturers, and our fabrication team, this individual will ensure designs meet customer requirements while maintaining compliance with applicable UL standards and industry best practices.

Primary responsibilities include the engineering and standardization of Motor Control Centers (MCCs), switchboards, and low-voltage switchgear. This is a unique opportunity to help create standardized products, establish engineering standards, and build a scalable manufacturing program centered around Siemens TIASTAR Motor Control Centers, switchboards, and low-voltage switchgear. The engineering standards, product offerings, and manufacturing processes developed through this role will help establish the foundation for the continued growth of AWC’s power systems business. If you’re looking for the opportunity to make a lasting impact while designing products that support customers across the country, we’d like to talk with you.

This is a hands-on engineering position. The successful candidate will divide their time between engineering, customer collaboration, and the manufacturing floor to ensure designs are practical, manufacturable, and built to the highest quality standards.

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Design complete low-voltage Motor Control Centers, switchboards, and switchgear to meet customer specifications and project requirements
  • Engineer complete MCC lineups, replacement buckets, retrofit assemblies, and custom modifications for existing installations
  • Develop standardized MCC bucket designs and engineered solutions that improve manufacturing efficiency, reduce lead times, and support repeatable production
  • Create one-line diagrams, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, bills of material, and fabrication drawings using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Help lead AWC’s long-term transition from AutoCAD Electrical to EPLAN while establishing engineering standards and documentation practices
  • Ensure engineered assemblies comply with UL standards, NEC requirements, customer specifications, and industry best practices while maintaining product listing requirements
  • Select and apply circuit breakers, motor starters, overload relays, variable frequency drives, soft starters, control transformers, PLC interface components, relays, instrumentation, and other power system components
  • Review customer specifications, electrical one-line diagrams, and project documentation to develop complete engineered solutions
  • Work directly with customers, consulting engineers, contractors, and manufacturers throughout project execution
  • Collaborate with Siemens and other manufacturing partners to develop standardized product offerings and engineering best practices
  • Provide technical support to fabrication technicians during assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and commissioning
  • Participate in factory acceptance testing, startup support, and field troubleshooting as required
  • Continuously refine engineering documentation, design standards, manufacturing processes, and product quality
  • Support estimating, project management, and sales teams with technical expertise during project development
  • Help expand AWC’s power systems product offerings and manufacturing capabilities

Skills you’ll need:

  • Associate’s or Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or equivalent industry experience
  • Experience designing low-voltage electrical power systems
  • Strong understanding of industrial electrical systems, motor control, and power distribution equipment
  • Experience using AutoCAD Electrical
  • Ability to interpret electrical one-line diagrams, control schematics, customer specifications, and equipment layouts
  • Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with engineering, sales, manufacturing, and customers.
  • Willingness to spend time both in the engineering office and on the manufacturing floor supporting production

Here’s what will set you apart:

  • Experience designing Motor Control Centers
  • Experience with Siemens TIASTAR Motor Control Centers
  • Knowledge of UL 845 Motor Control Centers
  • Knowledge of UL 891 Switchboards
  • Knowledge of UL 1558 Low-Voltage Switchgear
  • Familiarity with UL 508A Industrial Control Panels
  • Experience with EPLAN or other advanced electrical CAD software
  • Knowledge of SCCR calculations, selective coordination, and arc-flash considerations
  • Experience supporting factory acceptance testing, commissioning, or startup activities
  • Experience working for an OEM, systems integrator, switchgear manufacturer, panel builder, or industrial electrical contractor

Why This Role Is Different

You’ll play a key role in helping AWC build a nationally recognized power systems manufacturing program. From developing standardized MCC designs and engineering practices to creating repeatable product platforms, you’ll help define how AWC designs and manufactures power systems for years to come. As our manufacturing capabilities continue to expand, this role offers significant opportunities for technical leadership, engineering management, product development, and long-term career growth.
