Freelance Design Engineer Solidworks information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance design engineer SolidWorks?

To excel as a Freelance Design Engineer SolidWorks, you need expertise in mechanical design, 3D modeling, and a solid engineering background, often evidenced by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Mastery of SolidWorks software, proficiency with CAD tools, and familiarity with industry standards or certifications like CSWP (Certified SolidWorks Professional) are typically required. Strong project management, client communication, and problem-solving skills help you stand out in this independent role. These competencies ensure you can deliver high-quality, innovative designs that meet client needs and industry specifications efficiently.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance design engineers using SolidWorks, and how can they be managed?

Freelance Design Engineers specializing in SolidWorks often face challenges such as managing multiple client expectations, ensuring compatibility across different SolidWorks versions, and maintaining clear communication for project revisions. Juggling deadlines for various clients requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks. Staying current with SolidWorks updates and maintaining a reliable system for file sharing (such as cloud-based solutions) can help minimize technical issues. Open, proactive communication with clients about project scope, deliverables, and feedback loops is key to successful collaboration and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Freelance Design Engineer Solidworks vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Design Engineer SolidworksMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires Solidworks certification, relevant engineering degreesRequires mechanical engineering degree, possibly certifications
Work EnvironmentIndependent, project-based, remote or on-siteFull-time, in-house or consulting roles, office or factory settings
Industry UsageUsed across various industries for custom design projectsDesigns mechanical systems/products within companies
Search & Comparison IntentOften compared for freelance opportunities and skillsCompared for full-time engineering roles

Freelance Design Engineers Solidworks focus on independent, project-based work using Solidworks software, often with flexible schedules. Mechanical Design Engineers typically work full-time within companies designing mechanical systems. Both roles require engineering knowledge, but their work environments and employment types differ significantly.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY

Rhino Tool House is seeking a Design Engineer to support the design and execution of custom material-handling and industrial systems. This position involves both structural and mechanical design, with a primary focus on overhead cranes and runway systems, as well as conveyors, custom manipulators, lifting devices, and other engineered equipment. The Design Engineer will develop practical, buildable designs from concept through fabrication and installation, working closely with sales, project management, fabrication, and field installation teams.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Engineering & Design

  • Design overhead crane systems, runway structures, monorails, jibs, and custom lifting equipment
  • Design mechanical systems including conveyors, manipulators, fixtures, and custom industrial machinery
  • Perform structural and mechanical calculations including load paths, component sizing, and system capacity
  • Select and size mechanical components such as bearings, gearboxes, motors, drives, shafts, and fasteners
  • Apply applicable codes and standards including CMAA, AISC, ASCE, OSHA, and manufacturer guidelines
  • Evaluate customer requirements, site conditions, and operational constraints to develop compliant designs

3D Modeling & Drafting

  • Create 3D models and detailed assemblies using SolidWorks (required)
  • Generate fabrication drawings, weldments, and bills of materials from SolidWorks models
  • Produce layout drawings, installation details, and interface drawings
  • Review drawings for accuracy, constructability, and completeness
  • Utilize AutoCAD as needed for layouts, legacy drawings, or coordination (preferred, not required)

Project & Shop Support

  • Support sales during quoting and concept development with layouts and technical input
  • Support project managers during execution, revisions, and coordination
  • Provide engineering support to fabrication and installation teams
  • Assist with troubleshooting and resolution of design-related field issues

Process Improvement

  • Assist with development and maintenance of standard details, templates, and calculation tools
  • Participate in internal design reviews and continuous improvement efforts
  • Support documentation of best practices and lessons learned

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related engineering field
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and detailed design (required)
  • Mechanical engineering background with understanding of machinery, components, and assemblies
  • 2+ years of relevant engineering experience in industrial equipment, material handling, machinery, or structural systems
  • Strong understanding of loads, structural behavior, and mechanical fundamentals
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, structural, and equipment drawings
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects

WORK ENVIRONMENT & EXPECTATIONS:

  • Primarily office-based with periodic shop and jobsite visits
  • Hands-on, application-focused engineering environment
  • Emphasis on practical, buildable solutions rather than purely theoretical design
  • High degree of ownership and accountability for assigned designs

WHY JOIN RHINO TOOL HOUSE

  • Work on custom, one-off industrial systems rather than repetitive catalog products
  • Exposure to both structural and mechanical engineering challenges
  • Direct involvement from concept through fabrication and installation
  • Stable, growing organization with long-term career opportunities
  • Support for professional development and licensure
