How much do freelance data science physics jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average yearly pay for freelance data science physics in the United States is $122,738.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $98,500.00 and $136,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a freelancer's salary?

Freelance data science physicists typically earn between $50 and $150 per hour, depending on experience, skills, and project complexity. Annual income varies widely based on workload, with experienced freelancers earning six-figure sums by securing multiple projects and specialized expertise in data analysis, machine learning, and physics modeling.

Is it free lance or freelance?

The correct term is 'freelance,' which describes a self-employed professional working independently on projects such as data science or physics. Freelance data scientists often work on a contract basis, using skills in programming, statistical analysis, and tools like Python or R. The term 'free lance' is a common misspelling and is not correct.

What is the work of a freelancer?

A freelancer in data science and physics works independently to analyze data, develop models, and solve complex problems using programming tools like Python or R. They often collaborate with clients on project-based tasks, set their own schedules, and may need certifications or expertise in specific software or methodologies.

What does freelance mean?

Freelance in the context of a data science or physics role refers to working independently on a project basis rather than being employed full-time by a single employer. Freelancers typically set their own schedules, negotiate contracts directly with clients, and may work remotely using tools like Python, R, or cloud platforms. This arrangement offers flexibility but requires self-management and professional skills to secure projects and deliver results.

Job description

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We’re looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role
Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to support the United States Central Command (USCENTCOM) Directorate of Logistics (CCJ4) at MacDill AFB. In this role, you will play a critical part in accelerating AI-enabled capabilities for the Joint Logistics Enterprise. You will help modernize the Joint Logistics Common Operating Picture (JLOGCOP) by integrating AI/ML capabilities into dozens of automated and manual DoD data feeds. Your work will directly increase the speed of planning and enhance decision-making for missions that promote regional cooperation and deter aggression across the USCENTCOM area of responsibility.
Key Responsibilities
  • Communicate regularly with client leadership regarding enterprise values, project direction, and mission objectives.
  • Identify the intersection between strategic business value, simulation-based forecasting, and achievable technical work within the logistics domain.
  • Articulate and translate complex business questions into technical solutions using available DoD data sources and mission-level modeling outputs.
  • Explore and analyze diverse datasets—including live telemetry and simulated environments—to identify meaningful entities, relationships, and trends.
  • Design and implement robust data ingestion and cleaning pipelines to ensure high-quality inputs for AI/ML models and stochastic simulations.
  • Develop applications, simulation dashboards, and effective data visualizations to communicate complex insights and scenario outcomes to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Serve as a technical ambassador for executive DoD leadership to sponsor and grow data literacy and modeling proficiency across the enterprise.
Required Experience/Clearance
    • An active Secret security clearance is required (TS/SCI eligibility preferred).
    • 8+ years of professional experience in data science, analytics, or Operations Research.
    • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM field).
    • Proficiency in functional programming languages such as Python, R, or Scala.
    • Strong experience with Modeling & Simulation (M&S) frameworks (e.g., AFSIM, EADSIM, STORM, or similar mission-level tools).
    • Strong experience with database languages, specifically SQL.
    • Demonstrated ability to discern and apply appropriate statistical and probabilistic modeling approaches for different mission contexts.
    • Proven experience communicating key findings through technical visualizations, simulated course-of-action briefings, and technical reports.
    • Ability to work independently to recommend solutions while collaborating effectively within a cross-functional team.
    • Ability to travel up to 10% as required by the mission.

Desired Experience
  • Ph.D. in a quantitative discipline (Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Electrical Engineering, etc.).
  • Experience integrating simulation data into enterprise-level platforms (e.g., Advana, MAVEN, or C2IE).
  • Experience developing within cloud-based platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GovCloud).
  • Experience with large-scale data processing tools and distributed computing frameworks (e.g., Spark, Databricks).
  • Advanced experience with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, PowerBI, or R/Shiny).
  • Familiarity with DoD logistics data, USCENTCOM mission sets, and Joint Staff modeling requirements.
Redhorse Corporation is an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment and will not be discriminated against on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, veteran status, disability, or any other protected class.
