The Embedded Systems Cyber Effects Department supports a number of sponsors in the Intelligence Community and Department of War and their partners in domain-specific work across a variety of our sponsors' missions. The department work program delivers reverse engineering and cyber capabilities in partnership with organizations across MITRE National Security (MNS), MITRE Public Sector (MPS) and the other parts of the MITRE Technical and Engineering (MTE) organizations. Our focus is on applying advanced reverse engineering and capability research to maintain and enhance the impact of our sponsors on their core missions. Our staff maintain deep expertise in the relevant complex systems involved, while continuing to grow awareness of new technologies and techniques as the field of cyber and technology evolves. We lead the development and implementation of advanced capabilities that are critical to meeting national security objectives, using a variety of approaches and techniques in the areas of Reverse Engineering and Low-Level Binary Analysis, Cross-architecture System Analysis, Operating Systems Security, Network Systems and Protocol Analysis, Embedded Systems such as Internet of Things (IoT), network equipment, cellular devices and more.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The department is looking for a Cyber Reverse Engineer to join our team. In this role you will use and gain experience with:
  • Perform reverse engineering across multiple hardware architectures, including x86, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, and other processor families.
  • Analyze network systems and communication protocols to understand functionality, identify weaknesses, and support security assessments.
  • Work extensively with assembly language to inspect, interpret, and modify low-level software behavior across diverse platforms.
  • Utilize reverse engineering and debugging tools such as Ghidra, IDA Pro, and emulators to analyze binaries, investigate system behavior, and troubleshoot complex issues.
  • Research and work within operating system internals, including kernel-level components and driver development.
  • Apply knowledge of computer networking and cybersecurity principles to assess system security, detect threats, and support defensive and offensive analysis efforts.
  • Conduct vulnerability discovery, triage, and technical analysis to identify security flaws and evaluate their impact.
  • Design, develop, and maintain software and analysis tooling in C and Python to support research, automation, and operational objectives.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 3 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related engineering discipline and 3 years of work experience
  • Experience with Reverse Engineering and Debugging Tools (Ghidra, IDA Pro, Emulators, etc.)
  • Experience with Assembly Languages (x86, ARM, MIPS, PowerPC, etc.)
  • Experience reverse engineering compiled binaries
  • Experience programming in C and Python
  • High level desire to help their nation solve its most critical challenges
  • Ability to work with others to solve challenging technical problems
  • This position requires a Top-Secret/SCI with Full Scope Polygraph clearance
  • Per the U.S. Government's eligibility requirements for a clearance, U.S.
  • This position has an on-site requirement of 5 days a week on-site

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with various IDEs (MS Visual Studio, Eclipse, etc.) and collaboration tools
  • Experience extending Ghidra functionality via Java and Python
  • Experience with Linux and Linux command line tools
  • Experience with software development principles, tools, and techniques
  • Experience with software development with higher and lower-level languages
  • Advanced experience with three or more basic qualifications
