Job description

Overview
The Senior Production Editor is responsible for overseeing the end-to-end production workflow of peer-reviewed scientific articles and issues for journals in the AACR portfolio from acceptance through publication. This position ensures timely, accurate, and high-quality publication of journal content across online platforms. The Senior Production Editor will manage author relations to ensure a positive publication experience. The position will involve managing the work of a pool of 3-6 freelance proof reviewers and will include responsibility for their training and feedback to ensure adherence to both journal style and deadlines. The position also involves managing copyediting, maintaining production schedules, coordinating with editorial and technical teams, monitoring vendor performance, and working with colleagues to review processes to ensure high-quality results and customer satisfaction. The Senior Production Editor will take a leadership role in departmental initiatives and serve as a mentor within the division. Working independently and demonstrating good decision-making and copyediting skills during the journal production process are crucial for success.
Responsibilities
  • Manage the full production lifecycle of scientific journals, including copyediting, typesetting, proof review, issue review, and online publication.
  • Ensure adherence to journal style guides, ethical publishing standards, and indexing requirements.
  • Manage the work of a pool of 3-6 freelance proof reviewers to ensure adherence to journal style and deadlines, providing training and regular feedback.
  • Work with external vendors to manage the quality and turnaround time of deliverables.
  • Help develop and maintain efficient workflows, procedures, and documentation to ensure the consistent quality and timeliness of journal articles and issues.
  • Work with editorial, marketing, and platform teams to align production goals with broader organizational objectives.
  • Collaborate with publishing platform colleagues to optimize production tools and assist in the review and correction of online XML content.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in publishing, communications, life sciences, or a related field or 10 years of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in journal production or academic publishing. Author-facing experience preferred.
  • Experience working with varied scholarly publishing workflows and technologies.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills with advanced copyediting and proof review experience.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational abilities.
  • Familiarity with CSE and/or AMA Style Manual, production tracking systems, open access publishing models, indexing databases, and digital archiving standards.
  • Familiarity with peer review management systems (for example, eJP, ScholarOne, or Editorial Manager) is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Acrobat Pro.
