What does a freelance computer science tutor do?

A Freelance Computer Science Tutor provides personalized instruction to students or professionals looking to improve their computer science skills. They may help with understanding core concepts, programming languages, algorithms, data structures, or preparing for exams and technical interviews. Their goal is to make complex computer science topics more accessible and help learners achieve their academic or professional objectives.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a freelance computer science tutor?

To thrive as a Freelance Computer Science Tutor, you need a strong grasp of core computer science concepts, programming languages, and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. The Opportunity

We are seeking a patient, engaging, and enthusiastic Math & Chess Tutor to work one-on-one with a 9-year-old student after school two days per week.

The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in mathematics and chess and, most importantly, the ability to make learning enjoyable and engaging for a young student. Sessions will combine structured math support with chess instruction, helping build problem-solving skills, confidence, and strategic thinking.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one tutoring two afternoons per week after school.
  • Support the student with age-appropriate mathematics, including reinforcing concepts taught at school and building stronger foundational skills.
  • Identify areas where additional math practice or instruction would be beneficial.
  • Introduce and develop chess skills, including rules, tactics, strategy, openings, and game analysis appropriate to the student's level.
  • Use games, puzzles, challenges, and other interactive approaches to keep sessions engaging.
  • Encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, patience, and confidence.
  • Adapt lessons to the student's learning style, interests, and progress.
  • Provide occasional updates to the family regarding progress and areas of focus.

Qualifications

  • Strong proficiency in mathematics and chess.
  • Previous experience tutoring, teaching, coaching, mentoring, or working with children is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to explain concepts clearly and in an age-appropriate way.
  • Patient, positive, dependable, and comfortable working one-on-one with a 9-year-old.
  • Able to make lessons interactive and enjoyable while maintaining structure.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • University or college students with a strong background in mathematics, education, engineering, computer science, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
  • Competitive chess experience or formal chess coaching experience is an asset.
