What is a freelance computer aided design designer?

A Freelance Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer is an independent professional who uses specialized software to create technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models for various industries such as architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product design. Unlike in-house designers, freelancers work on a project-by-project basis for different clients, offering flexibility and a broad range of experience. Their work often includes interpreting client requirements, creating detailed designs, and collaborating remotely with engineers or architects to bring concepts to life. Freelance CAD Designers must be proficient in CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and have strong technical and communication skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance computer aided design designer?

To thrive as a Freelance Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer, you need a solid understanding of engineering or architectural principles, proficiency in CAD software, and typically a degree or certification in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit is crucial, along with familiarity with file management and rendering systems. Strong communication, time management, and problem-solving skills help you effectively collaborate with clients and deliver projects on schedule. These competencies ensure high-quality, accurate designs and reliable service, which are vital for client satisfaction and business growth.

How do freelance computer aided design designers typically manage client expectations and project timelines?

Freelance CAD Designers often juggle multiple projects for various clients, so clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential. They usually set realistic timelines by breaking down the design process into phases and providing clients with regular updates on progress. Managing expectations often involves establishing detailed project scopes at the outset, clarifying revision limits, and using project management tools to track deadlines. You will be working with a team of designers and fabricators to create experiences at events and within museum exhibits, trade-show exhibits, and corporate environments. We’re looking for a CAD Designer that can adapt to the exciting world of exhibit design and build and that is always up for the challenge of learning something new and being a part of creating some very cool things.

We embrace collaboration and the team approach but at the same time you have to excel as a lone-wolf when necessary. This is a good fit for a CAD Designer who loves to be part of a big picture, ultimately delivering a beautiful final result. Our culture is one that transcends traditional role-based lines and instead sees a lot of collaboration and cross-functionality between its team and the production of our product.

We believe in working hard. We believe in playing hard. We believe they should be one-and-the-same. Designing, creating, building, and insulting each other’s mothers is what we love–doing it as Unrivaled is icing.

We design and deliver brand experiences on levels only dreamt of—and we do it all in-house—from design, to digital development, to fabrication, to install. But it’s only through our team that any of this is possible, so we seek out those who fit our culture of under-promising and over-delivering and are never content with anything less than unrivaled.

The CAD Designer will work on drawings and layouts specific to our work in the exhibit and museum industry. This role will work closely with both the Creative Department and the Production Department, providing the drawings for build, assembly, and install. Attention to detail is a must as well as the ability to think creatively and support the overall vision as communicated by the Creative Director.
