A Freelance Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer is an independent professional who uses specialized software to create technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models for various industries such as architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product design. Unlike in-house designers, freelancers work on a project-by-project basis for different clients, offering flexibility and a broad range of experience. Their work often includes interpreting client requirements, creating detailed designs, and collaborating remotely with engineers or architects to bring concepts to life. Freelance CAD Designers must be proficient in CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and have strong technical and communication skills.

How do freelance computer aided design designers typically manage client expectations and project timelines?

Freelance CAD Designers often juggle multiple projects for various clients, so clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential. They usually set realistic timelines by breaking down the design process into phases and providing clients with regular updates on progress. Managing expectations often involves establishing detailed project scopes at the outset, clarifying revision limits, and using project management tools to track deadlines. This approach helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures smooth collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.

Job description

We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.
Racing is where our story began.
In 1901, Henry Ford climbed into a car he built himself-"Sweepstakes"-and beat America's most famous driver. He wasn't a racer, but he had to win. He did. Ford Motor Company was born from that victory.
That fighting spirit lives on in Ford Racing today. We're the engineers, strategists, and competitors who bring Ford's track-tested edge into every vehicle we build. Every track, every stage, every proving ground-that's where we prove ourselves.
The result: one of the world's most iconic brands, legendary nameplates, and a team unmatched in the industry.
Our mantra: Race to win, engineer to lead.
If you're a competitor, innovator, or performance obsessive, Ford Racing is where you belong. Help us write the next chapter.
In this position...
  • In Ford Racing, you will be a designer of hardware systems and components that will deliver the features and experiences that customers love. You will be designing our performance vehicles alongside our race cars. You're expected to be a flexible designer who can balance multiple activities in a rapidly changing, creative design environment. You'll utilize a systems approach to develop concepts, create 3D models and design hardware systems for our world-class vehicles.
  • This is a product development engineering - computer aided design (CAD) position, where product design expertise utilizing a systems approach is key. You'll work in a collaborative environment with interfacing organizations to produce designs our customers will love.
  • This role will have an early focus on translating performance into product design to bring the best products to life for our customers. As we build our team, we're focusing on a culture of excellence and collaboration where we work together to exceed our customers' expectations.

Responsibilities
What you'll do...
  • Develop key geometrical architectures that define the shape and functionality of a vehicle using 3D CAD, CAE, and physical prototypes.
  • Work with product design teams to develop vehicle CAD models starting from vehicle/racing attributes and working towards a product that can be manufactured for specific use cases adhering to all necessary requirements.
  • Ideate with engineers, designers, and other teams in creating new solutions for automotive performance/racing applications.
  • Problem-solve to find geometric solutions using 3D CAD that balance attributes with the product concept, business case, and other guiding principles.
  • Using a systems design approach, optimize a vehicle's topology to deliver efficient vehicle concepts.
  • Manage Pre-Program CAD lifecycle of content within PLM structure (Teamcenter/3DX).

Qualifications
You'll have...
  • Associates degree in a technical discipline or equivalent design experience within the automotive field or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in an automotive product development environment.
  • 2+ years of experience designing in Catia, 3DX, NX, SolidWorks or other CAD system.
  • Work experience in Ford's automotive product development environment.
  • Capability to use 3D CAD software as a collaborative tool.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills.
  • Strong grasp on mechanical engineering fundamentals and simple mechanisms.
  • Understanding and proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

Even better, you may have...
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or equivalent design experience within automotive field.
  • Experience in vehicle systems, vehicle architecture, or powertrain systems development.
  • EMM, studio, powertrain, or chassis experience.
  • Experience with motion and KBE tools.
  • Experience with Generative Design Optimization
  • Knowledgeable in design for manufacturing processes (injection molding, casting, etc.).
  • Excellent mentor and passionate about teaching others.
  • Hands on experience narrowing product scope and facilitating cross functional decisions on complex products.
  • Familiarity with global automotive regulations, consumer ratings, and major load cases that guide road vehicle product constraints.
  • Exemplary communication skills, highly collaborative and eager to participate in projects that transform the business.

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
  • Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
  • Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
  • Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more
  • Vehicle discount program for employees and family members and management leases
  • Tuition assistance
  • Established and active employee resource groups
  • Paid time off for individual and team community service
  • A generous schedule of paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year's Day
