What is a freelance computer aided design designer?

A Freelance Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer is an independent professional who uses specialized software to create technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models for various industries such as architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product design. Unlike in-house designers, freelancers work on a project-by-project basis for different clients, offering flexibility and a broad range of experience. Their work often includes interpreting client requirements, creating detailed designs, and collaborating remotely with engineers or architects to bring concepts to life. Freelance CAD Designers must be proficient in CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and have strong technical and communication skills.

How do freelance computer aided design designers typically manage client expectations and project timelines?

Freelance CAD Designers often juggle multiple projects for various clients, so clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential. General Purpose

The CAD Designer is responsible for creating, maintaining, and supporting CAD symbol graphics that represent the MillerKnoll product portfolio. These symbols enable architectural space planning and product specification workflows used by internal teams, dealers, and external partners.

This role produces accurate 2D plan-view and 3D CAD models for distribution through the CAD Pack symbol library and supported third-party specification tools. Key Responsibilities

  • Create and modify accurate 2D and 3D AutoCAD symbol graphics based on engineering drawings and product specifications.

  • Analyze assigned product additions or changes to determine required CAD symbol updates.

  • Maintain assigned CAD content files and documentation in accordance with established standards.

  • Execute CAD content updates under defined processes and technical guidelines.

  • Support publishing of new and modified CAD symbols to internal and external distribution platforms.

  • Participate in testing CAD Pack releases, validating symbol accuracy, usability, and compliance with standards.

  • Identify issues or inconsistencies in CAD content and recommend corrections or enhancements.

  • Work collaboratively with team members to complete assigned projects and meet delivery timelines.

  • Provide assistance to entry-level designers or support employees as needed.

  • Respond to CAD-related questions within the department and escalate issues when appropriate.

  • Follow established CAD development, quality, and publishing processes.

  • Make adjustments within assigned workflows and recommend process improvements.

  • Continue building proficiency with MillerKnoll tools, systems, and content-management platforms.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline, design, or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience using computer graphics applications, including AutoCAD 2D and 3D modeling.
  • Experience supporting digital content, design systems, or technical workflows in a professional environment.

Skills & Abilities

  • Proficient use of AutoCAD and familiarity with architectural or interior design applications.
  • Ability to work independently on complex assignments with defined objectives.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills within a team environment.
