What is a freelance computer aided design designer?

A Freelance Computer Aided Design (CAD) Designer is an independent professional who uses specialized software to create technical drawings, blueprints, and 3D models for various industries such as architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and product design. Unlike in-house designers, freelancers work on a project-by-project basis for different clients, offering flexibility and a broad range of experience. Their work often includes interpreting client requirements, creating detailed designs, and collaborating remotely with engineers or architects to bring concepts to life. Freelance CAD Designers must be proficient in CAD software like AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Revit, and have strong technical and communication skills.

How do freelance computer aided design designers typically manage client expectations and project timelines?

Freelance CAD Designers often juggle multiple projects for various clients, so clear communication and strong organizational skills are essential. They usually set realistic timelines by breaking down the design process into phases and providing clients with regular updates on progress. Managing expectations often involves establishing detailed project scopes at the outset, clarifying revision limits, and using project management tools to track deadlines. This approach helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures smooth collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.

Whether developing new shows or sustaining our existing offerings, DLE CAD Designers create the drawing packages, models, and visualization resources that bring our shows to life.
In this role, you will translate ideas and sketches through 3D CAD/BIM Software into documentation and models used by our partners to produce a variety of themed entertainment offerings. This job is highly collaborative, with CAD Designers constantly acting as information conduits to the larger design team. Your design work may support scopes as small as one-day events and as large as decade-spanning venues. To ensure the success of each DLE offering, you will be expected to lead design reviews, document markups, and model coordination efforts on your projects.

  • Organize and maintain a standardized design package for all discipline-specific design documentation and drawings
  • Ensure design presentation fidelity by developing and applying appropriate visual materials to model elements
  • Provide model support during the pre-visualization and programming phases
  • Assist each design discipline in creating As-Installed documentation
  • Stay current with industry computer graphics visualization software and technology
  • Maintain show documentation, model archives, and other shared resources for reuse by the larger team
  • Participate in the delivery of design intent documents that result in a realized design for our guests
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for other disciplines with regard to standards, and coordinated model reviews

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in the Entertainment Industry working in show development and operation of live shows drafting ground plans, detail drawings, schematics, 3D images, etc
  • Experience in themed design, drafting schematics, floor plans, and three-dimensional models utilizing Autodesk Revit
  • Comprehensive understanding of all aspects of Computer Aided Design and coordinated models
  • Ability to integrate design intent data from various platforms (2D and 3D)
  • Ability to translate 3D models to 2D design intent drawings
  • Working knowledge of current technology and industry standards for a wide variety of theatrical designs (audio, video, broadcast, effects, lighting, and control systems, scenery and facilities construction methodology) as applied to live show and facility systems (theatrical, industrial, concert, touring, etc.)
