Freelance Cms Developer information

What is a freelance CMS developer?

Freelance CMS developers are independent professionals who specialize in building, customizing, and maintaining websites using content management systems (CMS) like WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, or Shopify. They are typically hired on a project or contract basis to help clients design, implement, and optimize CMS-based sites according to specific needs. Their work may involve theme or template development, plugin integration, site migration, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance. Freelance CMS developers offer flexibility and expertise to clients who require tailored web solutions without hiring full-time staff.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance CMS developer?

To thrive as a Freelance CMS Developer, you need strong web development skills, a solid understanding of popular content management systems like WordPress, Drupal, or Joomla, and experience with HTML, CSS, PHP, and JavaScript. Familiarity with CMS-specific plugins, themes, APIs, and version control systems such as Git is typically required, as well as relevant certifications or a robust project portfolio. Excellent client communication, time management, and problem-solving abilities are crucial soft skills for managing projects and building client trust. These skills ensure the delivery of customized, functional websites that meet client needs and deadlines in a competitive freelance environment.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance CMS developers and how can they be addressed?

To address these, effective communication with clients about project scope and deliverables is essential. Additionally, investing time in continuous learning and leveraging community forums can help you stay current with CMS updates and best practices. Implementing project management tools can also streamline workflow and help juggle multiple assignments efficiently.

Key responsibilities

  • Write and refine storyboards and copy for social media, web pages, email newsletters, artist profiles, exhibition descriptions, and digital ads.

  • Adapt tone and style across institutional, editorial, and social contexts for art and culture clients.

  • Support editorial production by contributing to article drafts, interview edits, and feature writing as needed.

Job description

Digital Counsel is looking for a Freelance Copywriter with strong roots in the art and culture world to support content production across our client accounts. This is a project-based role for a writer who thrives on translating complex ideas into clear, compelling digital copy across registers—from social captions and email subject lines to voice-y newsletters and editorial features.

You're fluent in the language of contemporary art without being precious about it. You write quickly, edit rigorously, and understand that the best copy disappears into the work it describes.

This is a freelance engagement with the potential to grow into a full-time Social Media Manager role for the right candidate. We're looking for someone who wants to build something with us—not just fill a gap.

Responsibilities
  • Write and refine storyboards and copy for organic and paid social media, web pages, email newsletters, artist profiles, exhibition descriptions, and digital ads, including shortform video.
  • Adapt tone and style across institutional, editorial, and social contexts for a range of art and culture clients.
  • Support editorial production, including contributing to article drafts, interview edits, and feature writing as needed.
  • Incorporate feedback from account managers, designers, and clients efficiently through multiple revision rounds.
  • Maintain brand voice consistency and uphold high standards for clarity, accuracy, and cultural fluency.
  • Assist with CMS publishing and quality control as needed.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of professional copywriting experience, with a portfolio demonstrating art, culture, or related field work.
  • Deep familiarity with contemporary art and cultural discourse; comfortable writing for both specialist and general audiences.
  • Experience writing for digital channels including social, email, and web.
  • Strong editing skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work quickly, manage deadlines, and communicate proactively with a remote team.
  • Familiarity with Figma, Google Presentation, Claude, CMS platforms, Notion, or Basecamp a plus.
