What is a freelance Christian artist?

Freelance Christian Artists are independent creators who produce art inspired by Christian themes, values, and beliefs. They may work in various mediums, such as painting, illustration, graphic design, music, or digital art, and are often hired for projects like church murals, worship visuals, book covers, or music albums. Unlike staff artists at a specific organization, freelancers work on a project-by-project basis and serve a variety of clients, including churches, ministries, publishers, and individuals. Their work often aims to uplift, inspire, and communicate faith-based messages.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance Christian artist?

To thrive as a Freelance Christian Artist, you need strong artistic talent, a solid understanding of Christian themes, and a portfolio demonstrating your style and versatility. Familiarity with digital art tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Procreate, or traditional media, along with a professional website or social media presence, is highly beneficial. Excellent communication, time management, and the ability to interpret client visions are crucial soft skills for building relationships and managing projects. These capabilities ensure you can create meaningful, faith-based art that resonates with audiences while sustaining a successful freelance career.

How do freelance Christian artists typically find clients and maintain steady work?

Freelance Christian Artists often find clients through a combination of networking within faith communities, showcasing their portfolios on social media, and participating in Christian art events or conferences. Building relationships with churches, ministries, and Christian organizations is key, as many projects come from referrals or repeat clients. Consistent self-promotion and maintaining a professional online presence help attract new opportunities, while clear communication and timely delivery encourage repeat business. It can require persistence and adaptability, but many artists find that their reputation grows steadily through quality work and active engagement.

Job description

Description:

For more than 60 years, Tyndale has helped readers discover the life-giving truths of God’s Word. Today we’re one of the largest independently owned Christian publishers in the world. Though our business has grown, our mission remains the same: to open God’s Word to as many as possible in language they can relate to and understand.

Our Design team brings the words of Scripture to life through thoughtful, beautiful visual craft. We care deeply about typography, beauty, precision, and the small details that shape how readers encounter God's Word for the first time or the thousandth. It's a team that takes the work seriously without taking itself too seriously — collaborative, detail-obsessed, and united by the belief that good design is an act of stewardship.

We're looking for a freelance Senior Designer to join our on-call design roster, supporting our Bible publishing team during busy seasons, special projects, and staff transitions. This isn't just production work — it's an opportunity to shape how Scripture is presented to readers around the world, applying exceptional typography, design and layout skills to some of the most detailed and demanding design work in publishing. Success in this role means bringing strong technical craft, independent judgment, and a personal alignment with our mission, so that every cover, package, and layout delivers the product with clarity and beauty.

What You'll Do

  • Design and produce Bible covers, packaging, and possibly interiors
  • Apply strong typographic principles to highly detailed content
  • Prepare files for print production and manufacturing
  • Follow established brand, editorial, and design standards
  • Collaborate effectively with production artists and art directors
  • Manage assigned projects independently while meeting deadlines
  • Provide creative problem-solving and design expertise on challenging projects

Skills and Qualifications Needed

  • Exceptional design talent demonstrated through a strong portfolio
  • Advanced proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Experience in Bible, book publishing, editorial design, or related fields is a plus (not required)
  • Understanding of and appreciation for Christian publishing is a plus (not required)
  • Personal alignment with and adherence to the Bible as God’s Word, and agreement with our Statement of Faith
  • Freelance/on-call engagement; workload varies based on business needs and project schedules

We want to hear more about you and why you are interested in Tyndale and this role, so we highly recommend including a cover letter. Additionally, please include a portfolio. Applications without a portfolio will not be considered.

Tyndale has been repeatedly certified as a Best Christian Workplace. Learn more about us and what we believe at www.tyndale.com/our-mission.

The hiring range for this position is $34 to $40 hourly. Actual offers will take into consideration the candidate’s education, experience, industry knowledge, technical skills, and other relevant factors. A summary of Tyndale’s comprehensive benefits is: https://www.tyndale.com/careers/.
