Freelance Cfd Simulation Engineer information

What are some common challenges faced by freelance CFD simulation engineers when working with clients remotely?

Freelance CFD simulation engineers often encounter challenges related to communication and project scope when collaborating remotely with clients. Clearly defining project requirements, expected deliverables, and timelines can be difficult without in-person meetings, which may lead to misunderstandings or revisions. Additionally, freelancers are responsible for managing their own workflow, troubleshooting technical issues independently, and ensuring that simulation results are presented in a way that is easily understood by non-technical stakeholders. Building trust and maintaining transparency with clients through regular updates and clear documentation is crucial to overcoming these challenges.

What is the difference between Freelance Cfd Simulation Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectFreelance Cfd Simulation EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, CFD certificationsEngineering degree, CAD certifications
Work EnvironmentRemote, project-basedOffice or on-site, product development
Industry UsageEngineering consulting, simulation servicesProduct design, manufacturing

The Freelance Cfd Simulation Engineer specializes in computational fluid dynamics analysis on a project basis, often working remotely for various clients. In contrast, a Mechanical Design Engineer focuses on designing mechanical components and systems, typically within a company or manufacturing setting. Both roles require engineering credentials, but their work environments and industry applications differ significantly.

What is a freelance CFD simulation engineer?

Freelance CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) Simulation Engineers are independent professionals who use computer software to analyze and solve problems involving fluid flows, heat transfer, and related phenomena. They work on a project-by-project basis for various clients, often in industries like aerospace, automotive, energy, and manufacturing. Their responsibilities include setting up simulation models, running analyses, interpreting results, and providing recommendations to improve designs or processes. Freelance CFD engineers typically possess strong technical backgrounds in engineering or physics and are skilled in software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL Multiphysics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance CFD simulation engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Freelance CFD Simulation Engineer, you need a solid background in fluid dynamics, numerical analysis, and engineering principles, often demonstrated by a relevant degree. Expertise in industry-standard CFD software such as ANSYS Fluent, OpenFOAM, or COMSOL, along with proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is crucial. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to manage projects independently are standout soft skills for this role. These abilities are vital for delivering accurate simulations, meeting client expectations, and maintaining a successful freelance practice.

Job description

Senior Simulation Engineer (Bearings & Seals)

This role is fully onsite in Bloomfield, CT, five days per week, and the company will be relocating to Suffield, CT later in 2026.

About LiquidPiston

At LiquidPiston, weโ€™re redefining whatโ€™s possible in internal combustion. Our patented X-Engine architecture delivers a lighter, smaller, and more efficient solution compared to traditional engines โ€“ enabling new capabilities across aerospace, defense, and clean power generation. Weโ€™re not just building engines โ€“ weโ€™re pushing the boundaries of innovation in power and propulsion. As part of our team, youโ€™ll work alongside passionate engineers, designers, and researchers committed to solving hard problems and bringing cuttingโ€‘edge technology to life. If youโ€™re excited about cleanโ€‘sheet engine design, real R&D challenges, and the opportunity to make a direct impact in a small, agile team โ€“ this is your chance to help build something truly revolutionary.

Position Overview

The Senior Simulation Engineer will lead the design, development, and validation of rotary engine sealing systems and related components. This role involves applying advanced principles of tribology, materials science, and dynamic simulation to optimize seal performance, durability, and reliability under demanding operating conditions. The position requires close collaboration with manufacturing and engineering teams, handsโ€‘on problem solving during testing, and the ability to communicate technical findings effectively. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in highโ€‘temperature engine components, strong analytical skills, and a proven track record in independent and collaborative R&D projects.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the design and refinement of the rotary engine sealing system, including Apex Seals and Face Seals.
  • Contribute to the design, material selection, and optimization of journal bearings. Analyze bearing loads, clearances, oil flow, and housing deflection to ensure hydrodynamic stability and durability.
  • Apply advanced principles of tribology to minimize friction, optimize lubrication, and predict/mitigate wear on seals and housing surfaces.
  • Develop and utilize 1D/3D dynamic models to analyze seal motion, contact pressure, leakage, and flutter under various operating conditions (speed, temperature, load).
  • Specify and qualify materials appropriate for highโ€‘temperature, highโ€‘pressure sliding contact, and collaborate with manufacturing partners on component specifications.
  • Utilize Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to assess thermal distortion, structural integrity, and mechanical stress on sealing components and their supporting structures (rotor, housing).
  • Design, execute, and analyze engine test plans focused on seal performance, durability and friction.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex sealingโ€‘related engine performance issues identified during dyno testing and field trials.
  • Communicate findings clearly and effectively to stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field (Masterโ€™s preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in the design, development, and validation of ICE power cylinder ring packs and cylinder bores.
  • Proficiency with advanced engineering simulation tools (e.g., FEA/CFD such as Ansys, and specialized Ring Dynamics software).
  • Programming languages: Matlab (MUST), Python/C++.
  • Deep understanding of highโ€‘temperature materials science and their application in severe engine environments.
  • Experience with advanced surface treatments or coatings for friction reduction and wear resistance.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fastโ€‘paced R&D environment.
Benefits & Perks
  • Flexible PTO: We value workโ€‘life balance and encourage time to rest and recharge.
  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive medical and voluntary dental, and vision coverage โ€“ you choose what works best for you.
  • Equity Participation: Permanent employees receive RSUs (Restricted Stock Units).
  • 401(k) Match: We offer a 401k w/100% matching up to 3% of your salary and then 50% of contributions between 3-5%.
  • Career Growth: Ongoing training, mentorship, and learning opportunities to accelerate your growth.
