Job description

The Automation Engineer III is responsible for analyzing electro-mechanical requirements and establishing concepts, detailed designs, and programs (PLC and Robotic) for a broad scope of automated and integrated systems. This Senior Automation Engineer needs to be a leader, capable of coordinating engineering and design efforts, working within a team, and comfortable being in front of peers and stakeholders leading/conducting meetings. May also oversee multiple projects at once and mentor/inspire other junior engineers and designers. Essential responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead projects in the development, improvement, and implementation of automation in mechanical assembly, machining, and inspection process to include design, specification, directing and managing vendors, collaboration with stakeholders, installation and qualification of automated systems and equipment
  • Become a trusted source for automated system design, development, and support
  • Develop and implement improvements to existing automation in mechanical assembly, machining and inspection processes
  • Manage equipment purchase and installation
  • Coordinate projects and required resources for successful implementation
  • Work closely with internal and external customers and vendors to resolve issues and provide technical support
  • Support technicians on the factory floor as necessary in the manufacture, build, and validation of systems
  • Develop cost and time estimates
  • Perform system risk assessments
  • Ensure designs meet all safety standards and
  • Create support documentation (user manuals, prints, schematics, maintenance schedules, ).
  • Lead and direct meetings with other team members
  • Manage tooling and gauge design and drawings
  • Provide training and guidance to all employee levels in the operation and maintenance of new equipment
  • Troubleshoot and resolve any electro-mechanical related issues remotely and on-site as needed
  • Strive to develop new skills and embrace leading technologies
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Manufacturing Automation Engineer with 4-7+ years’ experience in this field
  • BS in Engineering/Electrical/Automation or equivalent experience
  • Lean manufacturing practices (Kanban, Poke-Yoke, JIT, Value Stream Mapping)
  • Tool and fixture design and GD&T
  • Strong Project Management skills
  • Understanding and detailed knowledge of PLC’s, low voltage controls, three phase power distribution, vision systems. Electronic sensors, pneumatics, hydraulics and robotics
  • Machine specification and purchase order writing
  • Excellent teamwork and collaboration capabilities
  • Design and application knowledge of ergonomic and machine safety standards
  • Autocad/Solidworks/MS Office suite
  • Display excellent written and verbal communication skills to communicate with all stakeholders

Physical Requirements

Tolerance for sitting and/or standing for long periods of time. Possess finger dexterity to write, type, and use a calculator. Maintain adequate vision to view small print and computer terminal. Ability to speak and hear, walk throughout facilities with occasional light lifting (25 pounds), stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching with hands and arms required. Ability to travel between multiple facilities as required to perform core job duties.
