Required Degree:PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, or a closely related field. The required degree must be completed by the start date.
Experience:Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in bioinformatics, computational biology, or related areas. Evidence of an active research program in bioinformatics or a related discipline that engages undergraduate and graduate students. Experience in data analysis, programming, machine learning, and artificial intelligence as applied to biological systems is expected.
Duties/Expectations:The Department of Biology at Brigham Young University invites applications for a continuing faculty status (CFS) position in Bioinformatics. We seek a candidate whose teaching and research programs will strengthen interdisciplinary training at the interface of biology, computation, and data science.
Primary teaching responsibilities will include courses such as BIO 165 (Introduction to Bioinformatics), BIO 264 (Computational Methods for Biologists), and upper-division and graduate courses in bioinformatics, data analysis, and machine learning. These courses serve students across multiple programs, including Biology, Bioinformatics, Computer Science, and other areas within the College of Life Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development and delivery of curriculum that integrates computational methods within biologically meaningful contexts.
The successful candidate will establish and maintain an externally visible research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students in mentored research experiences. Research areas may include, but are not limited to, bioinformatics, computational biology, machine learning for biological data, artificial intelligence in the life sciences, or related data-driven approaches. Candidates whose work advances or applies AI-enabled methods to biological problems are particularly encouraged to apply.
Faculty are expected to contribute to the academic life of the department through teaching, research, and service. This includes mentoring students, participating in departmental and university service, and supporting the mission of Brigham Young University.
