Freelance Avionics Systems Engineer information

What is a freelance avionics systems engineer?

Freelance avionics systems engineers are independent professionals who design, develop, test, and maintain the electronic systems used in aircraft, such as navigation, communication, and flight control systems. They work on a contract or project basis rather than as full-time employees, offering their specialized expertise to aerospace companies, airlines, or government agencies. These engineers often collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure avionics systems meet regulatory standards and operational requirements, and they may work remotely or on-site depending on project needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance avionics systems engineer?

To thrive as a Freelance Avionics Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, avionics integration, and aerospace standards, typically supported by a relevant degree and industry experience. Familiarity with tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, DO-178C certification processes, and avionics testing equipment is essential. Strong problem-solving, project management, and communication skills help you deliver solutions and collaborate effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These competencies are vital for ensuring the safety, reliability, and compliance of avionics systems in a dynamic, project-based environment.

What are some common challenges faced by freelance avionics systems engineers, and how can they be managed?

Freelance avionics systems engineers often encounter challenges such as adapting quickly to new project environments, ensuring compliance with strict aviation regulations, and maintaining effective communication across distributed teams. Managing these challenges typically involves staying up to date with industry standards (such as DO-178C and ARP4754A), leveraging strong project management skills, and using collaboration tools to coordinate with clients and multidisciplinary teams remotely. Building a robust professional network and maintaining clear documentation can also help ensure project continuity and client satisfaction.

What is the difference between Freelance Avionics Systems Engineer vs Aerospace Electronics Technician?

Help Shape the Future of Flight Through Advanced Avionics Engineering

Most engineers never have the opportunity to see their work contribute directly to technologies operating in the cockpit of an aircraft. At Universal Avionics, you will.

We're looking for an experienced Systems Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working across disciplines, and contributing to innovative avionics products that improve aviation safety, situational awareness, and operational performance worldwide.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of meaningful engineering work, influence product development, and help bring advanced aerospace technologies from concept through certification and deployment.

The Opportunity

At Universal Avionics, we develop advanced avionics, enhanced vision systems, and intelligent cockpit technologies that improve aviation safety and situational awareness worldwide.

For more than 40 years, Universal Avionics has been a trusted innovator in aerospace technology, supporting commercial airlines, business aviation, cargo operations, and special mission aircraft around the globe. As part of Elbit Systems, we combine the agility of a collaborative engineering organization with the strength and global reach of a leading aerospace and defense technology company.

We are seeking an Avionics Systems Engineer 3 to join our Engineering team in Duluth, Georgia. This role offers the opportunity to work on the development, certification, integration, and support of advanced avionics systems while collaborating with software, hardware, safety, certification, and program teams throughout the product lifecycle.

Beyond technical execution, this position provides opportunities to lead systems engineering activities, mentor junior engineers, influence product direction, and contribute to technologies that operate in demanding real-world flight environments.

What You'll Do

  • Ability to analyze complex technical problems and develop structured solutions
  • Experience collaborating across multidisciplinary engineering teams
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage priorities independently while maintaining attention to detail
  • Familiarity with aerospace certification concepts, avionics systems, or regulated product development environments is highly valued
  • Experience with programming, modeling, simulation, or engineering analysis tools is beneficial
  • Passion for aviation, technology, and continuous learning
Why Employees Love Working Here
  • Work on advanced avionics systems used by pilots and operators around the world
  • Participate in the complete product lifecycle from concept through certification and deployment
  • Collaborate with highly experienced engineering professionals across multiple disciplines
  • Opportunity to influence technical decisions and product direction
  • Gain exposure to real aircraft integration, testing, and certification activities
