What is a freelance audio visual programmer?

Freelance audio visual (AV) programmers are independent professionals who design, develop, and implement software solutions that control AV systems such as lighting, sound, video, and conferencing equipment. They work on a contract basis for various clients, tailoring AV system automation and integration to specific project needs. Their expertise often includes programming languages used in AV technology, troubleshooting technical issues, and ensuring seamless operation across devices and platforms. Freelance AV programmers typically work with commercial spaces, educational institutions, event venues, and corporate environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance audio visual programmer?

To thrive as a Freelance Audio Visual Programmer, you need proficiency in AV system design, programming languages like Crestron, AMX, or Extron, and a solid understanding of signal flow and integration. Familiarity with control systems, touch panel interfaces, and certifications such as Crestron Certified Programmer or similar are highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective client communication set top professionals apart. These skills ensure the seamless implementation and maintenance of complex AV solutions, meeting client needs efficiently and reliably.

How do freelance audio visual programmers typically collaborate with clients and on-site teams during project installations?

Freelance audio visual programmers often work closely with both clients and on-site technical teams throughout the project lifecycle. Communication is key—they may attend planning meetings, provide remote programming support, and sometimes travel to installation sites for system testing and troubleshooting. Clear documentation and responsiveness help ensure that system requirements are met and integration with other technologies goes smoothly. Building strong professional relationships with integrators, project managers, and end users is essential for successful project delivery and future opportunities.

Company Description

Innovative Sight & Sound is a leading technology integrator serving luxury residential and commercial clients throughout the Southeast. We design, install, and support sophisticated home technology systems, including automation, audio/video, lighting control, motorized shades, security, surveillance, and managed networks.

For more than 20 years and with 6 locations, our team has built its reputation on excellent work, clear communication, and dependable service. As our client base continues to grow, we are looking for an experienced A/V Technician to help keep our clients' systems operating reliably and deliver an exceptional service experience.

Position Overview

The Senior A/V Technician is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, maintaining, and enhancing technology systems in clients' homes and businesses.

This is primarily a service-focused position rather than a new-construction installation role. The ideal candidate is an experienced technician who enjoys troubleshooting, can work independently, communicates well with clients, and takes ownership of problems through resolution.

Service calls may involve home automation, audio/video, networking, lighting control, surveillance, security, motorized shades, and other connected-home systems. Some small installations, equipment replacements, upgrades, and retrofit work will also be part of the role.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and resolve issues involving audio/video, automation, networking, lighting control, surveillance, security, and motorized shade systems
  • Perform scheduled service calls, system inspections, and preventive maintenance visits
  • Troubleshoot system performance through both on-site and remote diagnostic tools
  • Identify the underlying cause of recurring issues rather than applying temporary fixes
  • Replace, configure, update, and test equipment when repairs or upgrades are needed
  • Complete small retrofit installations and system enhancements in finished homes
  • Provide clients with clear explanations of system issues, recommended solutions, and completed work
  • Confirm that systems are fully operational and that the client is comfortable using them before leaving
  • Document service findings, work performed, equipment used, and recommended follow-up
  • Escalate advanced programming, design, or infrastructure issues to the appropriate internal team member
  • Coordinate with service management, programmers, project managers, and other technicians when additional support is required
  • Protect the client's home, furnishings, and privacy while maintaining a clean and professional work environment
  • Participate in occasional urgent or after-hours service support as scheduled

Requirements

Experience and Technical Skills

We are looking for an experienced A/V technician or programmer with:

  • At least two years of experience in residential A/V, automation, low-voltage, networking, or related technology systems
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
  • Understanding of audio/video signal flow and system infrastructure
  • Experience servicing equipment racks, displays, projectors, speakers, amplifiers, receivers, streaming devices, and control interfaces
  • Working knowledge of residential networks, including routers, switches, wireless access points, and connected devices
  • Experience with Control4, Lutron, OvrC, surveillance, security, or motorized shade systems is strongly preferred
  • Ability to perform equipment replacements, system upgrades, and smaller retrofit installations
  • Ability to use testing equipment, manufacturer resources, and remote-support tools effectively
  • Knowledge of low-voltage cabling, terminations, and installation standards
  • Ability to safely work on ladders and move or install equipment when required
What Makes Someone Successful in This Role
  • A calm, methodical approach to troubleshooting
  • Strong communication and customer-service skills
  • Patience when working with clients who may be frustrated or unfamiliar with technology
  • The ability to work independently and manage a daily service schedule
  • Personal accountability for seeing issues through to resolution
  • Good judgment about when to resolve an issue independently and when to escalate it
  • Clear, thorough service documentation
  • Respect for clients' homes, schedules, and privacy
  • A willingness to continue learning as products and technologies change
  • A dependable, professional, and team-oriented attitude
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Reliable transportation
  • Basic tools appropriate for low-voltage and A/V service work
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and perform the physical responsibilities of the position
Benefits
  • Competitive hourly compensation based on experience
  • Group health insurance and subsidized dental and vision plans
  • 401(k) match
  • Paid time off
  • Company-provided iPhone
  • Ongoing manufacturer and technical training
  • Opportunities for professional growth within a growing regional company
