What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Freelance Attorney working remotely, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Attorney working remotely, you need a law degree, active bar membership, and expertise in your practice area. Familiarity with legal research platforms (such as Westlaw or LexisNexis), secure file-sharing tools, and time-tracking or billing software is typically required. These competencies ensure high-quality, compliant legal services and foster strong client relationships in a flexible, independent work environment.

What is a freelance attorney and how does remote work apply to this role?

A freelance attorney is a licensed lawyer who works independently, providing legal services to clients or law firms on a contract or project basis, rather than as a full-time employee. Remote freelance attorneys perform their duties from locations outside a traditional office, often from home, using digital tools to communicate with clients, conduct research, draft documents, and manage cases. This flexible arrangement allows attorneys to choose their projects, set their own schedules, and often work for multiple clients at once.
