What is freelance architectural model making?

Freelance architectural model making involves creating physical or digital scale models of buildings, landscapes, or structures for architects, designers, and developers on a contract or project basis. These models help visualize design concepts, communicate ideas to clients, and support planning or marketing efforts. Freelance model makers work independently, often collaborating with various clients, and may use materials such as wood, plastic, foam, or 3D printing techniques to build detailed and accurate representations.

How do freelance architectural model makers typically collaborate with architects and design teams during a project?

Freelance architectural model makers often work closely with architects and design teams throughout the project lifecycle. Communication is key—model makers usually attend project briefings, review digital plans or sketches, and provide recommendations on materials and construction techniques. They may participate in progress meetings, share updates through photos or video calls, and adapt their models based on feedback. This collaborative approach ensures the final model accurately reflects the design intent and meets client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a freelance architectural model maker, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Freelance Architectural Model Maker, you need a solid understanding of architectural principles, spatial visualization, and manual craftsmanship, often supported by a background in architecture, design, or fine arts. Expertise in using tools like laser cutters, 3D printers, and CAD software, as well as familiarity with materials such as foam board, wood, and acrylic, is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, time management, and effective client communication are essential soft skills for excelling in this role. These abilities ensure high-quality, accurate models that meet client expectations and project deadlines, supporting successful architectural presentations and proposals.

Job description

Description

The VP, Senior Director, PP&B Technology reports to the CIO, Corporate Technology and leads the technology strategy, portfolio, and organization supporting People, Purpose & Brand. This leader will have the opportunity to reshape a complex, global technology ecosystem and build the modern platforms, data capabilities, and AI-enabled experiences that will support Liberty Mutual's workforce and business priorities through 2030 and beyond.

The role is accountable for both transformation and execution, modernizing and simplifying the PP&B technology landscape while maintaining secure, stable, and resilient operations. The leader will oversee approximately $50 million in annual technology investment and partner closely with PP&B and Technology leaders to translate business priorities into measurable outcomes.

This is a senior technology leadership role requiring credibility across engineering, enterprise platforms, data, architecture, and AI. Equally important is the ability to influence and challenge executives, navigate complexity, make difficult tradeoffs, and lead teams through sustained transformation. The successful candidate will build a high-performing, inclusive organization and create clarity, accountability, and momentum across a broad ecosystem of internal teams and external partners.

The role requires a holistic leadership approach and breadth of perspective, drawing on enterprise and industry trends, to enable a high-performing, adaptable technology function and a data-first culture, led with an inclusive culture that fosters innovation, trust, people development, and integrity.

What This Role Is Accountable For

1. Transformation Through Technology Execution

  • Lead the modernization and simplification of the end-to-end PP&B technology ecosystem-core HR/HCM platforms, employee experience, people/workforce data and analytics, AI, integration, security, and the PP&B vendor landscape
  • Drive transformation across Talent, Total Rewards, Learning, Employee Experience, DEI, Communications, Brand, and Purpose in a mixed legacy and modern environment
  • Make durable platform decisions that reduce structural risk, improve resilience, and compound value through 2030 and beyond, balancing near-term delivery with multi-year modernization
  • Ensure PP&B system, technical, and product architectures stay aligned with business objectives

2. Strategic Partnership & Constructive Challenge

  • Act as a trusted technology and transformation partner to PP&B leadership, co-owning outcomes, not just delivery, and shape how leaders think about technology, data, AI, and operating models
  • Challenge functional leaders constructively and directly, bringing clarity to tradeoffs, sequencing, and change absorption
  • Build partnerships with PP&B leaders, vendors, and technology peers, and move leaders forward even amid ambiguity or resistance

3. Outcome-Driven Delivery & Accountability

  • Own execution and results across the PP&B technology investment portfolio (~$50M annual) and a technology organization of ~125 people
  • Jointly set financial targets with PP&B partners and ensure programs deliver to plan
  • Ensure investments translate into measurable outcomes, speed, quality, control, productivity, employee experience, and economics
  • Drive disciplined prioritization, dependency management, resource allocation, and delivery rigor across Run and Grow, holding teams and partners accountable for outcomes, not activity

4. Technology Excellence & Ecosystem Leadership

  • Serve as an active member of the Corporate Technology leadership team, contributing PP&B perspective to Liberty Mutual's enterprise technology agenda
  • Translate enterprise strategy into PP&B execution, high-performing engineering, AI-enabled SDLC evolution, modern architecture, and resilient operations
  • Lead adoption of modern engineering practices: product-centric delivery, platform thinking, automation, and AI across the SDLC
  • Apply and evolve enterprise standards for architecture, security, data, and AI, balancing consistency with the realities of PP&B transformation
  • Anticipate technology evolution, inform the enterprise roadmap, and ensure PP&B decisions strengthen the broader Liberty Mutual technology ecosystem

5. Talent, Culture & Change Leadership

  • Build and lead a high-performing PP&B technology organization that thrives in sustained transformation
  • Manage staffing strategy (headcount, skills, experience, and internal/external mix), and hire, develop, and coach leaders who operate with accountability and resilience under pressure
  • Foster a culture of direct communication, learning, inclusion, and execution excellence, and model courage in addressing conflict and making hard calls
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in technical or business discipline or related experience; Master's Degree preferred
  • More than 5 years in a leadership role required
  • Senior technologist with a proven record leading large-scale, multi-year transformations in complex, regulated environments; experience modernizing core platforms, data ecosystems, and AI-enabled capabilities, preferably in People/HR technology
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, challenge, and partner with executives on operating models, sequencing, investment tradeoffs, and change absorption, addressing conflict directly for better outcomes
  • Hands-on credibility across modern engineering, cloud-native platforms, enterprise SaaS, data platforms, and AI-enabled systems, with experience operationalizing product-centric teams, platform thinking, automation, and responsible embedding of data and AI in the SDLC at scale
  • Proven change leader who has built resilient, high-performing teams through sustained transformation
  • Strong vendor and ecosystem leadership, selection, governance, and value realization across major HR/People platforms and delivery partners, with proven experience implementing 3rd-party HCM/enterprise platforms, cloud-native solutions, and modern data ecosystems
  • Financial and operational acumen, including ownership of technology investment portfolios, multi-year budgeting (labor, software, compute), and blended workforce strategies
  • Business fluency across the PP&B domains, Talent/HR, Total Rewards, Learning, Employee Experience, Communications, Brand, and Purpose
  • Financial services, insurance, or other regulated-industry experience strongly preferred
