Job Description:
General function:
  • The 3D Model Finisher is an essential part of client Digital Engineering (DE) 3D Printing & Prototyping team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the advancement of client next-generation medical products and enhance the current product portfolio.
  • Under the general direction of 3D Printing & Prototyping management, the Engineering Technician I will provide quality "finished" 3D printed models and/or components/fixtures to business customers in a safe and timely manner.
  • We are excited to add a highly motivated individual that can adapt quickly and work within a dynamic environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Clean 3D Printed models according to defined standard operating procedures.
  • Hand finish 3D printed models using defined techniques while maintaining feature geometry and checking tolerances on key dimensions.
  • Use precision measurement devices (i.e. - digital calipers, GOM) to ensure dimensional accuracy.
  • Operate 3D Printing equipment when performing routine and rotational maintenance on a regular schedule to produce highly accurate medical device prototypes in a timely manner.
  • Maintain proficiency in viewing model files using CAD software (i.e. - Magics by Materialise).
  • Maintain finishing supplies in the laboratory and evaluation of special supplies, techniques, and equipment that may be beneficial for quality model finishing.
  • Perform work following standard operating procedures.
  • Work in accordance with Good Laboratory Practices, observe all BDTI Safety and Quality Standards, and maintain laboratory notebook according to BDTI Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Wear proper safety equipment where required.
  • Under the direction of the 3D Printing & Prototyping Manager, contribute as needed in the R&D of 3D printing applications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma is required.
  • Experience with model finishing or machining activities or a combination of equivalent education and experience is preferred.
  • Experience with 3D printing is a strong plus; examples: Stereolithography (SLA), Carbon (DLS), Digital Light Processing (DLP), PolyJet 3D Printing, and Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF).
  • Proven computer experience, including the ability to use CAD software desired.
  • Organized and time-oriented individual with the ability and drive to contribute towards the quick turn-around time on finished models while ensuring fine detail and accuracy.
  • Open to exploring new techniques related to Advanced Prototyping or CAE-related areas.
  • Proven ability to work successfully in both team and individual situations.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lift at least 40 lbs. a must.

  • The ideal candidate is proactive (i.e. -If they finish up their current work, they should be asking for the next task and eventually capable of recognizing what those next tasks are).
  • Must be able to operate well in a team environment.
  • Candidates must have clear communication skills (written & verbal skills).
  • The ideal candidate will not be afraid to ask questions or alert others of problems.
  • Attention to detail is extremely important.
  • The job revolves around the finishing processing of small plastic prototypes (i.e. - using sandpaper and files, performing tasks such as painting and dying).
  • The ideal candidate might be someone that enjoys working on little plastic models or doing arts & crafts.
  • The ideal candidate should be able to identify when there is a problem with a model and be able to alert the responsible team members to that problem.
  • Should enjoy working with their hands.
  • This position requires an individual to clean, sand and handle plastic prototypes with their hands while following all safety procedures and wearing proper PPE.
  • Should be open to exploring new techniques to enhance post processing capabilities.
  • 3D Printing / Additive Manufacturing is an ever-evolving group of technologies.
  • That means the way we post process parts does evolve as well.
  • The ideal candidate will be open to change and willing to explore these new techniques.
  • If a candidate brings new finishing techniques / ideas with them, that is a bonus.
  • Dedication & Ownership of tasks is a must.
  • The ideal candidate will take full ownership of tasks each day, including the part quality of an accepted job, and see those tasks / jobs through to the end.
