What is a franchise owner?

Franchise owners are individuals or entities who purchase the rights to operate a business under an established company's brand, system, and support. They invest in a franchise by paying initial and ongoing fees, and in return, they manage a business using the franchisor's proven methods, marketing, and products or services. Franchise owners benefit from brand recognition and training but are also responsible for the day-to-day operations, staff management, and local marketing of their franchise location. They must comply with the franchisor's standards and guidelines while striving to make their location profitable.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a franchise owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Franchise Owner, you need strong business acumen, leadership abilities, and an understanding of financial management, often supported by experience in operations or entrepreneurship. Familiarity with point-of-sale (POS) systems, inventory management software, and franchise-specific training or certifications is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and customer service skills help build strong teams and retain loyal customers. These skills and qualities are vital for maintaining brand standards, driving profitability, and ensuring long-term franchise success.

What are some common challenges faced by franchise owners in the early stages, and how can they be addressed?

Franchise owners often encounter challenges such as understanding and implementing the franchisor's systems, recruiting and training staff, and building a customer base in a new market. It can take time to adapt to the operational standards and establish efficient workflows. To address these challenges, franchisees should proactively engage in training provided by the franchisor, seek mentorship from experienced franchise owners, and leverage local marketing strategies to attract customers. Open communication with the franchisor and networking within the franchise community are also key to overcoming early hurdles.

What is the difference between Franchise Owner vs Franchise Manager?

AspectFranchise OwnerFranchise Manager
ResponsibilitiesOwns and operates the franchise, makes strategic decisionsOversees daily operations, manages staff, implements policies
CredentialsBusiness ownership experience, sometimes specific industry certificationsManagement experience, industry-specific knowledge
Work EnvironmentOwns the business location, involved in all aspectsWorks within the franchise location, focuses on operations
Employer/Industry UsageIndependent or part of franchise systemFranchise system's internal role

The main difference is that a Franchise Owner owns and manages the entire franchise business, while a Franchise Manager oversees daily operations within the franchise. Owners focus on strategic growth and ownership responsibilities, whereas Managers handle operational tasks and staff management.

How much do franchise owners get paid?

Franchise owners' earnings vary widely depending on the franchise type, location, and management skills. On average, they can earn from $50,000 to over $200,000 annually, but some owners may earn more or less based on profitability and expenses. Successful franchise owners often have strong business acumen and experience in operations and marketing.

Your Role as a Multi-Unit Sales Manager

Reporting to: Franchise Owner / MSO

We are looking for a Multi-Unit Sales Manager to join our team and support a portfolio of four COBS Bread bakeries. This position works directly for the franchise owner and plays a critical role in ensuring each location operates to COBS Bread's leading standards of fresh baked product quality and exceptional customer service. This role requires regular travel between the four assigned bakeries and a hands-on, in-store presence.

If you thrive on developing high performing teams, driving sales results, and being the go-to leader across multiple locations, we want to hear from you.

What Your Day Looks Like:

  • Ensure the profitability and successful performance of all four assigned bakeries
  • Counsel and coach store management teams on staffing, hiring, and training in a manner that drives sales growth, strengthens customer satisfaction, and ensures compliance with company policies and procedures
  • Conduct regular visits to each bakery to confirm stores are clean, well maintained, and merchandised to COBS Bread standards
  • Monitor cash flow and inventory across the portfolio, identifying and addressing variances proactively
  • Execute corporate and brand led marketing and promotional events as directed, while also identifying opportunities to develop location specific promotions that drive local sales
  • Work hands-on with each store manager to identify opportunities for improvement, build action plans, and elevate performance across the portfolio
  • Lead, coach and act as a resource for store level teams in day to day operational decision making
  • Drive operational excellence across all four bakeries to maximize sales, profitability, and customer satisfaction
  • Support the successful rollout of COBS Bread marketing, product, and systems initiatives across the portfolio
  • Build strong relationships with store teams to foster trust, alignment, and a shared commitment to results
  • Maximize sales growth through consistent focus on customer satisfaction and community engagement
  • Support bakery financial health through disciplined cost management and performance tracking
  • Participate in monthly performance reviews for each location and translate findings into clear, actionable next steps
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with COBS Bread brand standards across all four bakeries
  • Prepare and execute action plans to close any gaps identified through the Five Star program or other compliance reviews
  • Take appropriate and timely action to resolve any instances of non-compliance with brand standards
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and training of new staff across the portfolio to enable growth
  • Partner with the franchise owner on portfolio level planning that supports long term growth goals
  • Support new store openings or handovers within the portfolio as needed
  • Other projects and tasks as assigned

Requirements

Responsibilities Include:

  • A high energy, positive attitude with the ability to quickly build trust and meaningful relationships with store teams
  • 2+ years of experience in a franchise retail environment or multi-site retail management
  • 3+ years of managerial experience, ideally in food service, hospitality, or franchise retail
  • Comfort analyzing financial results and performance metrics, and translating that analysis into clear action plans
  • A valid driver's licence and willingness to travel regularly between four bakery locations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to influence and motivate store teams to drive continuous improvement
  • Strong ability to multi-task and manage competing priorities across multiple locations
  • Ability to work autonomously, exercise sound judgement, and take initiative with minimal supervision
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Post secondary education in Business Management preferred, but not required with equivalent experience

Benefits

Perks & What You'll Feel Good About

  • Competitive salary and vacation plan
  • Opportunity to play a lead role in the growth and success of a growing four unit bakery portfolio
  • A high level of autonomy and responsibility across multiple locations
  • An environment that encourages professional development and career growth within the organization
  • The opportunity to be part of a dynamic, hands-on team with direct line of sight to business results
