What are FPGA Managers?

FPGA Managers are professionals responsible for overseeing the design, implementation, and management of projects involving Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). They lead teams of engineers, coordinate project timelines, and ensure that FPGA-based solutions meet technical and business requirements. Their role often includes resource allocation, mentoring team members, and collaborating with other departments to deliver high-performance hardware solutions. FPGA Managers need a deep understanding of digital design, hardware description languages, and project management skills to be successful.

What is the difference between Fpga Manager vs FPGA Engineer?

AspectFpga ManagerFPGA Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's or master's in electrical engineering or computer engineering, with leadership experienceRequires a bachelor's or master's in electrical engineering or related field, with technical FPGA design skills
Work EnvironmentLeads teams, manages projects, oversees FPGA development processesDesigns, tests, and implements FPGA solutions, often working individually or in small teams
Industry UsageUsed in organizations needing project management and team leadership in FPGA projectsUsed in technical roles focused on FPGA hardware and firmware development

The main difference is that an FPGA Manager oversees FPGA projects and teams, focusing on leadership and coordination, while an FPGA Engineer concentrates on technical FPGA design and implementation. Both roles require similar technical credentials, but their responsibilities and focus differ significantly.

What are some common challenges faced by FPGA Managers when leading a hardware design team?

FPGA Managers often encounter challenges such as balancing project deadlines with the complexity of design tasks, ensuring effective communication between hardware and software teams, and staying current with rapidly evolving FPGA technologies. Managing resource allocation and prioritizing tasks while mentoring junior engineers can also be demanding. Successful FPGA Managers foster a collaborative environment, encourage knowledge sharing, and implement robust project management practices to overcome these hurdles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Manager, you need a solid background in digital design, FPGA architecture, and hardware description languages (such as VHDL/Verilog), often supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Xilinx Vivado, Intel Quartus, simulation software, and relevant certifications are highly valuable. Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills help in coordinating teams and collaborating across departments. These skills are crucial for delivering complex FPGA projects on time, ensuring high-quality designs, and driving innovation within the organization.

Job description

Job Details:
Job Description:
Altera is an independent company delivering programmable solutions that power high-performance and mission-critical applications. Our FPGA technologies are widely deployed across aerospace, defense, and government systems where performance, reliability, and security are essential.
Role Overview
Altera is seeking a Customer Projects Hardware Engineer to support the Aerospace, Defense, and Government (ADG) organization. This role focuses on delivering customer-specific hardware solutions, partnering closely with defense and government customers to design, develop, and deploy FPGA-based systems for mission-critical applications.
Candidates must be located within a commutable distance of the Altera New Jersey or New Hampshire office, once the office is established.
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and validate hardware solutions for ADG customer projects and reference platforms
  • Collaborate directly with aerospace, defense, and government customers to translate system requirements into hardware architectures
  • Support board-level design, including schematics, layout guidance, and system integration
  • Lead hardware bring-up, debug, and validation in lab and customer environments
  • Partner with FPGA, software, and systems engineering teams to deliver end-to-end solutions
  • Perform signal integrity (SI), power integrity (PI), and timing analysis for high-performance, ruggedized designs
  • Support integration of high-speed interfaces (e.g., PCIe, Ethernet, DDR) in complex systems
  • Develop technical documentation, validation plans, and customer-facing design collateral
  • Troubleshoot system-level issues in demanding, mission-critical environments

The pay range below is for NJ or NH locations. Actual salary may vary based on a number of factors including job location, job-related knowledge, skills, experiences, trainings, etc. We also offer incentive opportunities that reward employees based on individual and company performance.

  • RTL experience-both board level hardware design and RTL code
  • Experience with board-level design, schematics, and hardware bring-up/debug
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based systems and integration into larger platforms
  • Knowledge of high-speed digital design and interfaces (e.g., DDR, PCIe, Ethernet)
  • Hands-on lab experience using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related tools

Security Clearance Requirement
This position may involve work on U.S. Government contracts that require access to controlled or classified information. Accordingly, all applicants must be eligible to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance as a condition of employment. Failure to obtain or maintain the required security clearance may result in the withdrawal of an employment offer or termination of employment, consistent with applicable law.
