What is an FPGA engineer?

Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) are integrated circuits used in a variety of technology hardware that are designed to be programmed after they are manufactured. An FPGA engineer uses Hardware Description Language (HDL) to develop and test the configuration that is programmed into these circuits. They may also be responsible for integrating several FPGAs together to form a more complex working system. Their work results in applications that are useful in a variety of industries and technical settings.

What are some common challenges FPGA engineers face when transitioning a design from simulation to hardware implementation?

One common challenge FPGA Engineers encounter is ensuring that a design, which works well in simulation, functions correctly on actual hardware. Timing constraints, resource utilization, and hardware-specific bugs can arise that were not apparent during simulation. Debugging these issues may require using on-chip debugging tools and working closely with hardware teams to resolve signal integrity or board-level problems. Effective communication and iterative testing are key to a smooth transition from simulation to deployment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Engineer, you need strong expertise in digital logic design, proficiency in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, and typically a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Experience with FPGA development tools (such as Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus), simulation software, and relevant certifications can be highly beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective teamwork are standout soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for successfully designing, verifying, and deploying reliable and efficient FPGA-based solutions in complex engineering environments.

What is the difference between Fpga Engineer vs Digital Design Engineer?

AspectFpga EngineerDigital Design Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; FPGA certifications beneficialBachelor's or higher in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related fields; often similar certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and implementing FPGA hardware in labs or on-siteDesigning digital circuits, FPGA/ASIC hardware, often in similar environments
Industry UsageCommon in telecommunications, aerospace, defense, and embedded systemsUsed across electronics, telecommunications, and embedded systems industries

Both roles involve digital hardware design, often overlapping in skills and industry applications. An FPGA Engineer specializes in FPGA development and implementation, while a Digital Design Engineer may work on broader digital circuit design, including ASICs and FPGA hardware. The roles are closely related, with significant overlap in skills and work environments.

Are FPGA engineers in demand?

FPGA engineers are in high demand due to the increasing use of field-programmable gate arrays in industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, and defense. Their skills in hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog and experience with FPGA development tools are highly valued, leading to strong job growth and competitive salaries.

What do FPGA engineers do?

FPGA engineers design, develop, and test digital circuits using Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). They write hardware description language code, such as VHDL or Verilog, to create custom hardware solutions for applications like communications, aerospace, and embedded systems. Their work often involves simulation, debugging, and optimizing FPGA performance using specialized tools and development environments.

Position Overview

Are you an experienced electrical design professional ready to step out of the production queue and lead multi-faceted project teams from conceptual layout to final construction? We are seeking a Lead Electrical Designer / Engineer to direct and elevate our trade-specific engineering initiatives. In this role, you will serve as both a technical authority and a project manager—leading project teams, quarterbacking complex trade-specific schematics, and maintaining technical mastery across intricate building systems.

Joining our team means stepping into a culture built on technical excellence, structured quality control, and proactive leadership. As a Job Captain and technical mentor, you will drive project delivery across the full project lifecycle, optimize BIM/CAD workflows, and directly influence the professional development of junior engineers. This is a high-visibility, career-defining platform for a senior professional to sharpen their management capabilities, elevate client experiences, and deliver legacy-building infrastructure.

Core Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership & System Design: Direct the complete electrical design process for complex building projects, independently generating intricate electrical room layouts, advanced equipment selections, calculations, and custom sequences of operations with functional mastery.

  • Project Stewardship & Lifecycle Ownership: Function as the project Job Captain from start to finish—quarterbacking interdisciplinary coordination, managing project folder architectures, maintaining tight timelines, and ensuring seamless execution across all phases.

  • Team Management & Staff Development: Directly supervise and mentor a dedicated team of design professionals, guiding their career trajectories, elevating Level 3/junior engineering competencies, and managing workload delegation to strict deadlines.

  • Quality Assurance & Risk Prevention: Own the end-to-end quality control pipeline by auditing background drawing sets/XREFs, conducting rigorous drawing checks, maintaining complete checklist histories, and resolving design gaps prior to document issuance.

  • Construction Administration & Field Services: Provide authoritative leadership during construction administration, conducting existing condition surveys, reviewing shop drawings and submittals, preparing due diligence reports, and executing thorough field observations.

  • Codes, Standards, & Specifications: Apply advanced knowledge of local and national building codes (including Florida Building Code, NEC, and local municipality guidelines) while developing master technical specifications using firm templates.

  • Client & Stakeholder Communication: Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients, architects, consultants, vendors, and internal multidisciplinary teams, conveying complex engineering scopes with clarity, urgency, and composure under pressure.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree (4-year) in Electrical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.

  • Experience: Minimum 6 years of experience working as an Electrical Designer or Engineer within a professional engineering consulting firm, including at least 2 years in a Senior Designer role under the supervision of a licensed PE.

  • Leadership Track Record: Minimum 2 years of direct experience leading multidisciplinary engineering projects of varying scales and complexities, with demonstrated success managing direct reports.

  • Software Proficiency: Working knowledge of REVIT and AutoCAD, combined with advanced proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Technical Mastery: Proven ability to independently analyze existing conditions, troubleshoot complex electrical system challenges, and author robust due diligence reports with cost estimations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensure: Active Florida Professional Engineer (PE) License or EIT on a rapid track to PE licensure.

  • Regional Code Expertise: Hands-on experience navigating Florida Building Code (FBC), NEC compliance, and local South Florida municipal permitting processes.

  • BIM Strategy: Advanced proficiency in BIM workflows, digital project setup, model coordination, and automated drafting standards.

  • Sector Versatility: Prior experience managing MEP project teams within commercial, institutional, healthcare, or hospitality environments in South Florida.
