What is an FPGA Embedded System Engineer?

FPGA Embedded System Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and implement embedded systems using Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). They create custom hardware solutions by programming FPGAs to perform specific tasks, often working closely with software and hardware teams. Their work involves hardware description languages like VHDL or Verilog, debugging, testing, and optimizing systems for performance, power, and efficiency. These engineers are crucial in industries like telecommunications, automotive, aerospace, and consumer electronics, where high-performance and flexible hardware solutions are needed.

How does an FPGA Embedded System Engineer typically collaborate with software and hardware teams during a project?

FPGA Embedded System Engineers often serve as a bridge between hardware and software teams, collaborating closely to ensure seamless integration of programmable logic with embedded software. They work with hardware engineers to define system requirements and interface specifications, while coordinating with software developers to implement and test embedded code on the FPGA platform. Regular meetings, design reviews, and the use of version control systems help facilitate smooth communication and resolve integration challenges. This collaborative approach ensures that both hardware and software components function together effectively, leading to successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an FPGA Embedded System Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an FPGA Embedded System Engineer, you need a strong background in digital design, hardware description languages (such as VHDL or Verilog), and embedded systems, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency in using FPGA development tools like Xilinx Vivado or Intel Quartus, as well as experience with simulation and debugging tools, is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help engineers excel in this role. These competencies ensure the successful design, implementation, and integration of reliable, high-performance embedded solutions.

What is the difference between Fpga Embedded System Engineer vs Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineer?

AspectFpga Embedded System EngineerDigital Signal Processing (DSP) Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering; FPGA certificationsBachelor's/Master's in Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, or related; DSP certifications
Work EnvironmentDesigning FPGA hardware, embedded software development, hardware testingDeveloping algorithms for signal processing, software implementation, testing
Industry UsageAerospace, defense, telecommunications, embedded systems

While both roles involve hardware and software skills, Fpga Embedded System Engineers focus on FPGA hardware design and embedded systems integration, whereas DSP Engineers specialize in developing algorithms for signal processing. Both roles often collaborate but serve different technical needs within similar industries.

Job description

Position Title: Design Engineer II - Electrical
Department: Engineering
Location: Lenexa, KS

About AGI
AGI is a global food-based infrastructure company publicly traded in Canada. With over 3,800 employees and over 30 global manufacturing brands, AGI is a leading provider of equipment and technology solutions for agricultural commodities including seed, fertilizer, grain and feed systems and an expanding platform for food processing facilities.
The Opportunity
The Design Engineer II - Electrical is responsible for owning and delivering electrical and embedded hardware subsystems within connected products. This role contributes to the design, development, validation, and support of PCB-based electronic systems throughout the hardware development lifecycle. This role also contributes to delivering connected hardware solutions that enable real-time farm and grain monitoring through integrated embedded systems.
Responsibilities:
  • Own delivery of electrical subsystems from design through validation.
  • Generate schematics, PCB layouts, Bills-Of-Materials, and design documentation.
  • Execute hardware development lifecycle activities, including prototyping and testing.
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs to balance performance, cost, and complexity within the subsystem scope.
  • Perform internal product testing and evaluate products for compliance with design criteria.
  • Product validation and verification testing to ensure the product meets required standards (FCC, CE, CSA, UL/cUL, ATEX) and revise designs as needed.
  • Integrate electrical subsystems with firmware, sensors, and mechanical systems to ensure system-level performance.
  • Apply design principles, including manufacturability, reliability, and cost optimization, to develop robust solutions.
  • Identify technical risks and issues early and drive them to resolution.
  • Conduct analysis to find the root cause of hardware or low-level software design issues in existing or new products and generate detailed reports to document the findings and resolutions.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including firmware, mechanical, and manufacturing.
  • Contribute to technical design decisions within the assigned subsystem scope.

Requirements and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-7 years of experience in electrical or embedded system design.
  • Experience designing embedded electronic systems and PCB-based hardware, including schematics and layout.
  • Understanding the hardware development lifecycle, including design, prototyping, validation, and support.
  • Experience hardware testing, debugging, and root cause analysis.
  • Familiarity with embedded systems, microcontrollers, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Experience integrating electrical subsystems with firmware, sensors, and mechanical systems.
  • Understanding design principles, including manufacturability, reliability, and cost optimization.
  • Awareness of regulatory and compliance considerations for electronic systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues within the scope.
  • Ability to evaluate design tradeoffs and make effective engineering decisions.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Strong communication skills and willingness to learn

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with PCB design and electronic design tools (e.g., Altium, Eplan, or similar)
  • Experience with hardware validation, test equipment, and debugging tools.
  • Experience with microcontroller-based systems and embedded architecture.
  • Familiarity with communication interfaces (e.g., CAN, SPI, USB, Ethernet).
  • Experience with wireless-enabled systems (e.g., LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth).
  • Experience with EMI/EMC, ESD, and signal integrity considerations.
  • Experience supporting products through regulatory certification (UL, FCC, CSA, ATEX).
  • Experience working in industrial or manufacturing environments
  • Experience with Agile project management tools such as Jira and Confluence.
