Introduction

The Test and Characterization Engineer (Principal Engineer) is a key technical contributor within the Quantum Technology Solutions organization focused on enabling quantum device platforms. This role is responsible for defining and executing electrical characterization and reliability methodologies to evaluate device performance, variability, and reliability. The position supports development of quantum technologies, including qubits across multiple modalities and cryogenic electronics.

Summary of role

As a Principal Engineer, this role leads electrical characterization and test development for semiconductor and quantum devices. The engineer will design and execute test strategies, develop automated test programs, and analyze measurement data to support device validation, process optimization, and integration activities.

The role emphasizes hands-on laboratory execution, test automation, and data-driven insights to enable high-performance, reliable, and scalable semiconductor platforms across a range of operating conditions, including cryogenic environments.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute electrical characterization methodologies for semiconductor and quantum devices (DC, RF, pulsed, and transient measurements)
  • Design and implement test plans to evaluate device performance, variability, and parametric behavior across operating conditions
  • Perform reliability testing and stress measurements (e.g., TDDB, BTI, HCI, electromigration) to assess device lifetime and failure mechanisms
  • Develop and maintain automated test programs and scripts for probe and bench-top measurement systems
  • Operate wafer probe stations, parameter analyzers, RF test systems, and cryogenic test platforms
  • Support characterization of devices at cryogenic temperatures, including low-noise and quantum-sensitive measurement environments
  • Analyze electrical and reliability data to identify performance trends, variability sources, and failure mechanisms
  • Correlate electrical test results with process, materials, and device
  • Support development of test structures (PCM, test macros, and test chips) for validation and model extraction
  • Apply statistical analysis and variability modeling to support process optimization and yield improvement
  • Document test methodologies, results, and analysis to support knowledge transfer and scalable development

Other Responsibilities:

  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Required Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, or related field
  • 5-8+ years of experience in semiconductor device characterization, test engineering, or related field
  • Experience with electrical characterization techniques and measurement systems (e.g., parameter analyzers, probe stations)
  • Experience with reliability testing and failure analysis methodologies
  • Experience writing test automation code (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Strong understanding of semiconductor device physics and device operation
  • Experience analyzing large datasets and extracting key performance insights
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with RF or high-frequency device characterization
  • Experience with cryogenic testing or low-temperature device measurements
  • Familiarity with quantum devices (e.g., superconducting or topological systems)
  • Experience with wafer-level test, probe card development, or test hardware integration
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis, variability modeling, and DOE methodologies
  • Experience correlating electrical data with process or materials changes
  • Experience working in advanced R&D environments

Expected Salary Range

$85,000.00 - $146,000.00

The exact Salary will be determined based on qualifications, experience and location.
