Foundry Machine Operator information

What is a foundry machine operator?

Foundry machine operators are skilled workers who operate and monitor machinery used in metal foundries to cast metal parts and products. They prepare molds, pour molten metal, and ensure that the finished products meet quality and safety standards. These operators also maintain equipment, troubleshoot issues, and adhere to safety protocols to prevent accidents. Their work is essential in industries such as automotive, construction, and manufacturing, where metal components are frequently used.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a foundry machine operator?

To thrive as a Foundry Machine Operator, you need knowledge of metal casting processes, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with foundry machinery, tools for measuring and inspecting castings, and adherence to safety standards are essential, with optional certifications such as OSHA training being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help operators adapt to changing production needs and maintain safety. These skills ensure efficient, safe, and high-quality production in demanding industrial environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by foundry machine operators, and how can they be managed effectively?

Foundry Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as working in high-temperature environments, managing heavy equipment, and ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols. To address these, operators receive thorough safety training, use personal protective equipment, and follow well-defined operational procedures. Effective communication with team members and supervisors also helps in quickly resolving equipment issues or production bottlenecks. Staying organized and proactive in equipment maintenance can further minimize downtime and enhance workplace safety.

What is the difference between Foundry Machine Operator vs Foundry Mold Maker?

AspectFoundry Machine OperatorFoundry Mold Maker
CredentialsHigh school diploma, on-the-job trainingHigh school diploma, specialized training or apprenticeship
Work EnvironmentFactories, foundries, manufacturing plantsWorkshops, foundries, manufacturing facilities
Job FocusOperating and maintaining casting machinesDesigning and creating molds for casting
Common UsageManufacturing industries, metal castingFoundries, metal casting facilities

The main difference is that Foundry Machine Operators focus on operating casting equipment, while Foundry Mold Makers specialize in creating molds used in casting processes. Both roles are essential in metal manufacturing but involve different skills and responsibilities.

Job description

About Us

Foundry Robotics is building an AI-native robotics manufacturing company focused on deploying advanced assembly and production capability for leading robotics companies and national-security-critical hardware. Basically, weโ€™re building robots that build robots.

We are reimagining manufacturing through advanced robotics. Our mission is to rebuild the American manufacturing industry as an AI-first, assembly-focused, dual-use contract manufacturer. We aim to empower manufacturers with intelligent, efficient, and adaptable robotic systems that redefine productivity and quality. As a founding member of our engineering team, you will have a direct and significant impact on our product, culture, and ultimate success.

Our wedge isnโ€™t just โ€œmodels.โ€ Itโ€™s the software layer that turns:

  • Orders โ†’ Schedules

  • Schedules โ†’ Work instructions

  • Work โ†’ Telemetry

  • Telemetry โ†’ Continuously improving throughput, quality, and cost

This role is not robotics engineering. It is for senior software engineers who build the cloud + on-prem systems that run the factory, and the data backbone that makes those systems observable, reliable, and scalable.

We are also hiring Robotics Research Engineers separatelyโ€”this is a different role.

The Role

We are hiring a Senior Software Engineer (IC) to build the backend systems and infrastructure that power the factory of the future.

You will design and implement:

  • Cloud-based backend systems

  • On-prem factory services

  • Embedded-to-cloud data flows

  • Petabyte-scale visual data pipelines

  • Machine learning infrastructure across multiple compute environments

You will build production systems that stay online when factories are noisy, connectivity is imperfect, and downtime costs real money.

This is a hands-on engineering role. You will ship.

Key Responsibilities Cloud + On-Prem Architecture
  • Build and maintain a cloud-based backend for planning, scheduling, execution, inventory, traceability, and telemetry

  • Design multi-compute environment architectures spanning embedded, on-prem, and cloud systems

  • Implement infrastructure-as-code using Terraform

  • Ensure secure, reliable data movement between factory floor and cloud

ML Infrastructure & Data Systems
  • Build PB-scale visual data pipelines for ingesting, curating, indexing, and preparing manufacturing data

  • Design container orchestration and microservices architectures for ML infrastructure

  • Enable fine-tuning workflows and model deployment across hybrid compute environments

  • Implement workflow orchestration and data lifecycle management

Reliability + Production Systems
  • Design systems that tolerate intermittent connectivity and degraded network modes

  • Build observability: metrics, logging, tracing, runbooks

  • Make pragmatic tradeoffs between correctness, speed, and maintainability

  • Maintain high uptime in industrial production environments

Full-Stack Execution (When Needed)
  • Implement APIs, services, database schemas, event-driven systems

  • Contribute to operator-facing tools and internal dashboards

  • Ship production-grade systems end-to-end

What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • 3โ€“6 years building and shipping real production software

  • Deep experience in backend systems and infrastructure, hybrid cloud + edge experience, infrastructure and DevOps, OR data at scale

  • Comfortable operating independently and owning complex systems endโ€‘toโ€‘end

  • Comfortable working at large scale (terabytes โ†’ petabytes)

Nice to Have
  • Experience supporting machine learning infrastructure in production

  • Experience in manufacturing, robotics, or industrial systems

  • Ability to obtain a government security clearance

  • Experience working on projects related to the Department of Defense (DoD)

Growth Opportunities
  • Help define the software backbone of an AI-native factory

  • Work across robotics, ML infrastructure, and industrial systems

  • Grow into larger technical ownership over time

  • Influence architecture and longโ€‘term system design

Why Join Us?

This is one of the only places where worldโ€‘class manufacturing executives, mechanical engineers, robotics researchers, and software engineers sit in the same room building production systems together.

We are focused on reinventing manufacturing to be localized, autonomous, and software-defined.
The base salary range for this fullโ€‘time position in the location of San Francisco is:

$150,000โ€”$250,000 USD

Compensation packages at Foundry Robotics for eligible roles include base salary, equity, and benefits. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position, determined by work location and additional factors, including jobโ€‘related skills, experience, interview performance, and relevant education or training. Foundry Robotics employees in eligible roles are also granted equity based compensation, subject to Board of Director approval. Youโ€™ll also receive benefits including, but not limited to: Comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage, and generous PTO.
