What is a founding full stack engineer?

A Founding Full Stack Engineer is an early, core technical team member at a startup who is responsible for building both the front-end and back-end of the company's product. This role goes beyond typical engineering, often involving product decisions, architecture design, and collaborating directly with the founders. Founding Full Stack Engineers help shape the company's culture, technical direction, and can have significant equity stake. Their work is crucial in taking the business from idea to launch, often in a fast-paced, resource-limited environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a founding full stack engineer?

To thrive as a Founding Full Stack Engineer, you need expertise in both front-end and back-end development, deep knowledge of programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Ruby, and experience with scalable architectures, often backed by a degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Familiarity with frameworks (React, Node.js, Django), version control systems (Git), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP), and DevOps practices is typically required. Strong problem-solving, initiative, adaptability, and excellent communication distinguish successful candidates, enabling effective collaboration in a startup environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for building robust products rapidly and influencing the company's technical direction from its early stages.

What unique challenges might a founding full stack engineer face when joining an early-stage startup?

As a Founding Full Stack Engineer at an early-stage startup, you'll often balance building core product features with setting up foundational technical infrastructure. This role typically requires wearing multiple hats, from architecting systems and writing code to making critical technology decisions and collaborating closely with non-technical founders. You may encounter challenges such as ambiguous requirements, shifting priorities, and limited resources, but you'll also have significant influence over the company's technical direction. The dynamic environment encourages rapid learning and offers accelerated career growth, particularly for those who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative settings.

Job description

We're looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to design, build, and maintain enterprise-grade applications across the full development stack. You'll work across front-end, back-end, cloud infrastructure, and AI-powered features with minimal day-to-day oversight. If you thrive in ambiguous environments and take pride in clean, scalable code, this role is for you.

The Full Stack Engineer is responsible for both front end and backend development tasks, including database tasks. This individual will be well versed with programming languages that are required for client (user) side development, as well as integration approaches and technologies to bridge contemporary front-end implementations with legacy backend systems.

What You'll Do

  • Design and develop scalable web applications using .NET and Angular
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps to support continuous delivery
  • Manage and optimize Azure SQL databases, including schema design and query performance
  • Integrate Azure OpenAI and Computer Vision services into production applications
  • Deploy and manage containerized workloads using Docker and Kubernetes
  • Debug complex issues across the full stack, from UI rendering to database queries to cloud infrastructure
  • Collaborate with product, architecture, and business teams to translate requirements into working software
  • Own your work end to end, from design through deployment and monitoring

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of full stack development experience
  • Strong proficiency in .NET (Core / 8+ preferred) and Angular (v20 preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps, including pipelines, repos, and release management
  • Solid understanding of CI/CD principles and pipeline automation
  • Experience with Azure SQL, including stored procedures, indexing, and performance tuning
  • Working knowledge of Azure OpenAI and Computer Vision APIs
  • Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes for containerized deployments
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills across distributed systems
  • Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
  • Clear communicator who can translate technical decisions for non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Azure Monitor, Application Insights, or other observability tools
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture
  • Exposure to Agile / Scrum delivery models
  • Azure certifications (AZ-204, AZ-400, or similar)
