What is a founding designer?

Founding Designers are design professionals who join a company at its earliest stages, often as one of the first design hires or even as a co-founder. Their role goes beyond traditional design work, as they help shape the company's brand, product direction, and user experience from the ground up. Founding Designers collaborate closely with other founding team members, influence the overall vision, and often set the design culture and processes for the organization. Their impact is significant because early design decisions can shape the company's trajectory and influence its long-term success.

What is the difference between Founding Designer vs Product Designer?

CredentialsPortfolio, design experience, startup understandingPortfolio, design experience, user-centered design skills
Work EnvironmentEarly-stage startups, founding teamsEstablished companies, product teams
Industry UsageCommon in startups and new venturesWidespread across tech and non-tech companies
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding startup roles, founding team contributionsDesign responsibilities, career growth

Founding Designers focus on establishing the visual and user experience foundation in early-stage startups, often wearing multiple hats. Product Designers typically work within established teams to refine and develop products, emphasizing user-centered design. While both roles require strong design skills, Founding Designers are more involved in shaping the company's initial design direction, whereas Product Designers focus on ongoing product development and improvement.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a founding designer?

To thrive as a Founding Designer, you need a strong foundation in visual and interaction design, a robust portfolio, and experience in early-stage product development. Proficiency with design tools like Figma, Sketch, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as familiarity with prototyping and collaboration platforms, is essential. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and entrepreneurial thinking help you collaborate effectively with technical and business teams in a dynamic startup environment. These skills ensure you can shape the product vision, build cohesive user experiences, and drive the company's design direction from the ground up.

What are the main challenges a founding designer faces when working in an early-stage startup environment?

As a Founding Designer in an early-stage startup, you'll often work with limited resources and shifting priorities. You'll collaborate closely with founders, engineers, and sometimes directly with customers to shape both the product and the brand vision from the ground up. The role requires balancing rapid prototyping, user feedback, and long-term design strategy, often in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment. While this can be challenging, it also offers significant autonomy and the opportunity to have a major impact on the company's trajectory and culture.

Job description

About Plasmidsaurus
Plasmidsaurus is on a mission to accelerate new cures and promote a healthier planet by unlocking a new level of productivity for scientists. Our sequencing services are used daily by thousands of innovators, including Nobel laureates, Fortune 100 pharma, and over 70,000 scientists.
We began by revolutionizing plasmid sequencing, making it exponentially cheaper and faster, with innovative sequencing technologies and a global network of laboratories that turn samples into answers in hours, not weeks.
Now we are expanding that same disruptive model across all of genomics. With the launch of our new RNA-seq service, we are taking a bold step toward our vision to sequence everything, providing scientists everywhere with faster, simpler, and more affordable access to the data that powers discovery.
Every team member at Plasmidsaurus plays a crucial role in driving the future of biotech research. Together, we are building the world's most efficient sequencing engine that operates overnight, scales globally, and helps scientists make breakthroughs faster than ever before.
The role
We are hiring a Lead Product Designer to own the user experience from order to results. You will work with our product engineers, bioinformaticians and scientists on the next big thing in biology.
What you'll do:
  • Own the end-to-end product experience from ordering through sequencing results and raise the bar on every screen you touch.
  • Establish a design system for our UI and data visualization. You will focus on the sequencing results experience where most of our value reaches the customer.
  • Work with our engineers and bioinformaticians to turn complex workflows into intuitive software that makes the user think "why did this not exist before?"
What we're looking for
  • You have a portfolio that shows range and craft. We want to see things that have made it to production.
  • A track record of operating semi-autonomously: ideally as a founding designer, senior IC, design lead, or similar role where the design decisions were yours to make and live with.
  • You can ramp fast in technical domains. We don't require a science background, but you should be energized by complexity and willing to learn.
What would impress us even more
  • You are comfortable wearing the PM hat occasionally and making sure our user experience is reflected in product decisions.
  • You have experience designing for a deep technical domain or complex data visualizations.
  • You got obsessed with a problem and built something to solve it, even though nobody asked you to.
What we offer
  • We are a bootstrapped, profitable company at an exciting inflection point.
  • Ownership and impact. Your work goes directly to 70,000 scientists, including Nobel laureates, who trust Plasmidsaurus with their research.
  • A tower office in South San Francisco with bay views, state-of-the-art lab, and the occasional batch of liquid nitrogen ice cream.

We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't perfectly align with the job description as we seek out diverse and creative perspectives. Team members who love to learn and collaborate in an inclusive environment will thrive with us. We are an equal opportunity employer and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. If you need additional accommodations to feel comfortable during your interview process, please let us know at careers@plasmidsaurus.com.
