Foundation Systems information

What is a foundation system?

Foundation systems are the structural elements of a building or infrastructure project that transfer loads from the structure to the ground. They are designed to support the weight of the building and ensure stability by distributing loads evenly to prevent settling or shifting. Common types of foundation systems include shallow foundations (like spread footings and slabs-on-grade) and deep foundations (such as piles and drilled shafts), with the choice depending on soil conditions, building size, and other engineering factors.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in foundation systems, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Foundation Systems often encounter challenges such as varying soil conditions, tight project deadlines, and coordination with multiple engineering disciplines. Addressing these requires strong analytical skills to assess subsurface conditions, proactive communication with geotechnical and structural teams, and careful project planning to adapt designs as new site data emerges. Emphasizing collaboration and continuous learning helps ensure solutions are both safe and cost-effective, while also supporting professional growth within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a foundation systems engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Foundation Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering, with expertise in geotechnical analysis and foundation design, typically supported by a relevant engineering degree and licensure (PE or equivalent). Proficiency with technical tools such as AutoCAD, PLAXIS, or other structural analysis software is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with multidisciplinary teams help ensure successful project outcomes. These skills are essential for designing safe, efficient, and cost-effective foundation systems that meet regulatory standards and client needs.

What is the difference between Foundation Systems vs Foundation Repair Technician?

Foundation Systems professionals focus on designing and planning foundation solutions, often involving engineering and project management. In contrast, Foundation Repair Technicians perform hands-on repair work at job sites, implementing the plans created by Foundation Systems specialists. Both roles are essential in the foundation industry but differ in responsibilities, credentials, and work environment.

Job description

Micropile Drilling Foreman / Working Superintendent

Foundation Systems Hawaii / Mort Drilling Services
Location: Oahu, Hawaii
Full-Time | Long-Term Position | 40–50 Hours per Week

Foundation Systems Hawaii and Mort Drilling Services are seeking an experienced Micropile Drilling Foreman / Working Superintendent to join our team on Oahu.

We specialize in foundation drilling, micropiles, ground improvement, and structural foundation repair throughout Hawaii. We are specifically looking for a senior-level individual with small-diameter foundation drilling experience, ideally with direct experience installing hollow-bar grout injection micropiles.

This is a hands-on field leadership position. The ideal candidate is equally comfortable operating a drill, setting up a grout plant, troubleshooting equipment, leading a crew, communicating with a general contractor, and making sure the work is installed correctly and documented properly.

Ideal Experience

Direct experience with some or all of the following is strongly preferred:

  • Small-diameter foundation drilling and micropile installation
  • Hollow-bar grout injection micropiles
  • Excavator-mounted rock drills, including TEI or similar drill attachments
  • Steel-track crawler drilling rigs such as Casagrande, Hütte, or similar equipment
  • Grout pumps, mixers, colloidal mixers, and grout batch plants
  • Setting up, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting drilling and grouting equipment
  • Grout mix designs, grout quality control, sampling, and compressive strength requirements
  • Micropile load testing in compression and tension
  • Hydraulic jacks, load cells, gauges, reaction systems, and load-test equipment
  • Calibration certificates and documentation required for inspectors and engineers
  • Reading plans, specifications, and understanding project scope

Field Leadership & Project Responsibilities

This position requires more than simply operating equipment. We are looking for someone who understands how a professional drilling subcontractor operates on commercial, government, and residential projects.

Candidates should be comfortable:

  • Leading and working alongside a field crew
  • Planning daily drilling and grouting operations
  • Mobilizing, setting up, and breaking down drilling and grout equipment
  • Working safely and efficiently on large commercial and government job sites
  • Following site-specific safety requirements, PPE requirements, and project specifications
  • Completing daily reports, timecards, drilling logs, grout records, and other required documentation
  • Recognizing when field conditions or requested work fall outside our contracted scope
  • Communicating professionally with superintendents, inspectors, engineers, and project managers
  • Identifying potential extra work and obtaining direction before proceeding
  • Maintaining high standards for equipment, workmanship, productivity, and job-site organization
  • Training and leading less-experienced crew members

Our work ranges from large commercial and government projects to residential foundation drilling and structural repair. Flexibility is important. You must be willing and able to transition between different types of projects and working conditions.

The Person We're Looking For

We recognize that hollow-bar grout injection micropiling is a specialized trade and that very few candidates will have experience with every piece of equipment or operation we perform.

For that reason, we place a high value on character, mechanical ability, leadership, and the ability to learn complex equipment quickly.

An exceptional candidate may be considered without direct hollow-bar micropile experience if they have substantial drilling, foundation, or heavy-equipment experience and can demonstrate:

  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Proficiency operating heavy equipment
  • Strong hydraulic equipment operating skills
  • The ability to coordinate multiple hydraulic functions smoothly and precisely
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
  • Leadership experience as a foreman, superintendent, lead operator, or equivalent
  • Dependability and personal accountability
  • Excellent safety awareness
  • Good communication and documentation skills
  • A willingness to learn our specialized drilling and grouting systems

This is not an entry-level position. Some specialized training can be provided, but applicants must have a strong foundation of directly relevant experience.

What We Offer

Foundation Systems Hawaii and Mort Drilling Services are established, rapidly growing specialty foundation contractors with a strong backlog of work and a reputation for taking on challenging projects throughout Hawaii.

We offer:

  • Highly competitive compensation based on experience and capability
  • Minimum 40 hours per week, typically up to approximately 50 hours per week
  • Paid vacation
  • 401(k) retirement plan
  • Medical insurance
  • Dental insurance
  • Vision insurance
  • Opportunities for advancement into higher-level field leadership and management positions
  • Long-term, stable employment
  • A professional working environment with experienced, hardworking team members

We are a relatively small company, which means exceptional employees are noticed. We are looking for people who want to become an important part of our organization, take ownership of their work, and grow with the company over the long term.

Our home base is Oahu, Hawaii, and preference will be given to candidates already located on Oahu.

We will consider highly qualified candidates from outside Hawaii; however, only applicants with directly relevant experience who have their own means and ability to relocate to Hawaii will be considered.

To Apply

Please submit a resume detailing your relevant drilling, micropile, foundation, heavy-equipment, grouting, and/or field leadership experience.

Please specifically identify the drilling rigs, drill attachments, grout equipment, micropile systems, and load-testing equipment you have personally operated or supervised.

We are looking for experienced, senior-level candidates interested in making Hawaii their long-term home and becoming an important part of our company.
