What is a forward deployed software engineer?

Forward Deployed Software Engineers (FDSEs) are software engineers who work directly with clients to understand their business needs and build custom technical solutions. Unlike traditional software engineers, FDSEs are often embedded with clients, sometimes on-site, to ensure that the software they develop aligns closely with client requirements. They act as a bridge between the product development team and the client, solving complex technical challenges in real-world environments. FDSEs need strong technical skills, adaptability, and excellent communication abilities, as their role combines engineering with client-facing responsibilities.

How does a forward deployed software engineer balance technical development work with client-facing responsibilities?

As a Forward Deployed Software Engineer (FDSE), you often split your time between hands-on coding and directly engaging with client teams to understand their unique needs. This dual focus means you’ll frequently participate in meetings to gather requirements, troubleshoot issues on-site, and explain technical solutions in accessible terms. Successfully balancing these responsibilities requires strong communication skills, adaptability, and the ability to quickly learn new domains. While challenging, this blend of work provides FDSEs with deep exposure to real-world problems and accelerates their professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a forward deployed software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Forward Deployed Software Engineer, you need strong programming skills (often in languages like Java, Python, or C++), problem-solving abilities, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms, data integration tools, and experience with version control systems like Git are typically required, along with industry certifications being a plus. Excellent communication, adaptability, and client-facing skills help you understand and address unique customer needs in dynamic environments. These skills ensure you can deliver effective, tailored software solutions in fast-paced, client-centric roles.

Job description

Zof AI is seeking a Forward Deployed Software Engineer to embed with enterprise customers and make AI agents work in their environment. This role owns the full arc from business intent to shipped outcome: scoping the real problem, deploying and optimizing agents in live customer systems, embedding them into enterprise platforms and workflows, and staying accountable until the outcome is delivered and verified. The ideal candidate is a strong engineer who thrives in front of customers and measures success in working systems, not demos.

Engineering · Senior · Full-time · On-site · San Francisco, CA

Responsibilities
  • Embed with enterprise customers to deploy Zof AI in their environment.
  • Own delivery from business intent to shipped, verified outcome.
  • Integrate and optimize agents inside live customer systems and workflows.
  • Embed agents into enterprise platforms such as CRMs, ITSM, and internal tools.
  • Debug and harden deployments in environments you do not control.
  • Translate customer constraints into product and platform feedback.
  • Build reusable deployment patterns from repeated customer work.
  • Be the technical face of Zof AI inside customer organizations.
Requirements
  • Strong software engineering foundation.
  • Experience deploying or integrating systems in customer environments.
  • Ability to work directly with enterprise stakeholders.
  • Comfort with ambiguity, legacy systems, and imperfect access.
  • Strong ownership of outcomes, not just code.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • Willingness to travel to customer sites when needed.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment.
Nice to have
  • Prior forward deployed, solutions, or professional services engineering experience.
  • Experience with enterprise platforms like Salesforce, ServiceNow, or SAP.
  • Experience deploying AI agents or LLM systems for customers.
  • Experience in early-stage startups.

Must be able to design, deploy, and debug agent systems inside real customer environments
