What types of projects or industries commonly employ Fortran programmers?

Fortran Programmers are frequently employed in industries that rely heavily on scientific computing and mathematical modeling, such as aerospace, meteorology, engineering, finance, and research institutions. Typical projects include developing or maintaining simulations, numerical analysis tools, or legacy applications in areas like fluid dynamics, climate modeling, or quantitative analysis. Daily work often involves collaborating with scientists, engineers, or researchers to ensure software accuracy and performance. Although some roles are independent, many positions are part of multidisciplinary teams working to solve complex technical challenges. Opportunities for career advancement include moving into lead programmer, software architect, or technical specialist roles within scientific and engineering organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fortran programmer?

To thrive as a Fortran Programmer, you need strong proficiency in Fortran programming, mathematical or scientific problem-solving skills, and typically a degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with legacy codebases, numerical libraries, version control, and high-performance computing platforms is common, and some positions may prefer certifications in scientific computing or experience with parallel processing tools. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and good communication skills are valuable soft skills for maintaining and updating legacy systems while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams. These skills ensure efficient code maintenance, successful modernization of existing applications, and effective team integration in technical and research-driven environments.

What is a Fortran programmer?

A Fortran Programmer is a software developer who specializes in writing, maintaining, and optimizing code using the Fortran programming language. Fortran is widely used in scientific computing, engineering simulations, and high-performance computing applications. These programmers work with legacy code, develop new algorithms, and ensure computational efficiency in fields like physics, meteorology, and aerospace. They may also translate older Fortran programs into newer versions or integrate them with modern technologies.

Is Fortran programming still used?

Fortran programming is still used in scientific, engineering, and high-performance computing fields where legacy code and numerical computation are common. While its popularity has declined for general software development, specialized applications continue to rely on Fortran for its efficiency and numerical capabilities.

Are Fortran programmers still in demand?

Fortran programmers are still in demand in specialized fields such as scientific computing, high-performance computing, and engineering simulations. Many organizations require maintenance and development of legacy systems, often valuing expertise in Fortran alongside knowledge of numerical methods and scientific libraries.

Job description

Role Overview: Hydraulic & Hydrologic (H&H) engineer to conduct engineering design and studies for oil, gas and chemical projects and other projects supported by the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) discipline in Houston. The successful candidate will report to and receive technical and administrative supervision and functional oversight from the H&H Group Supervisor. The position requires the ability to work independently and exercise engineering judgement in problem definition, evaluation, selection and application and adaptation of engineering techniques, procedures and criteria.

This individual will be required to coordinate work tasks with other technical specialists in the H&H group and other disciplines, and with engineers, designers, and other project personnel. Work involves organizing and performing hydraulic and hydrologic analyses and calculations, preparing reports and necessary documents to support the design of liquefied natural gas plant projects and other infrastructure projects. Responsibilities include analysis, evaluation and design of storm-water management and site drainage facilities; surface water hydrology and flood protection measures; pipeline systems (gravity flow and pressurized systems); pump intakes, discharge outfalls, and other offshore or onshore hydraulic structures.

Responsibilities also include the conducting of mathematical model studies, employing appropriate one- or multi-dimensional models, for the runoff analysis, open channel flow analysis, pipeline transients, sediment transport, environmental mixing, hydrodynamic and solute transport; and maintaining and enhancing H&H group's in-house hydraulic transient software. Work may require travel to project sites in the U. S.

and overseas on generally short-term assignments. The position requires working knowledge and understanding in rainfall-runoff analysis and modeling, storm water drainage system design and open-channel flow analysis, and basic understanding of scour protection design, sediment transport analysis in river and coastal environment, steady-state and transient analyses of pipeline systems, coastal hydrodynamic modeling and mixing analysis. Should also be familiar with computer applications such as HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, TR-20, SWMM, CORMIX, SLOSH, Mike21, Delft3D, IMPULSE or equivalent.

Some knowledge of US and international design codes and practices are desirable. Must demonstrate excellent verbal and written skills to communicate with team in preparation of reports, memo, calculations and other documentations. Must be proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, database software.

Should have programming experience in Fortran, Visual Basic or C++. Willingness and ability to travel to and remain at jobsites for up to several weeks at a time. Required Qualification/Skills/Knowledge: M.S

degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis on hydrology, hydraulics, or fluid mechanics, and graduate coursework in fluid dynamics, engineering hydrology, open channel and pipeline hydraulics, sediment transport, coastal engineering, and numerical methods. Minimum of 1 to 2 years of working experience in hydrology, hydraulics, fluid dynamic simulation or a related field; 2 to 5 years working experience preferred. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is preferred with eligibility for Professional Engineering (PE) license in one year.

Other Skills Overview: Hydraulics and Hydrology: Coastal and Marine Engineering (Basic) Design of Intake and Discharge Structures (Basic) Environmental Hydraulics (Basic) Hydraulic Network and Transient Analysis (Intermediate to Advanced) Open Channel and River Hydraulics (Intermediate) Sediment Transport (Basic) Storm water Management Studies and Drainage Design (Advanced) Surface Water Hydrology and Flood Studies (Intermediate) Automation Skills: Office and Technical (Advanced)
