Fortinet Engineer information

What is a Fortinet Engineer?

A Fortinet Engineer is an IT professional who specializes in configuring, managing, and troubleshooting Fortinet security products, such as FortiGate firewalls, VPNs, and other network security solutions. They are responsible for ensuring the security and integrity of an organization's network infrastructure by implementing advanced security measures and monitoring for threats. Fortinet Engineers often work closely with IT teams to design security architectures, perform system updates, and respond to security incidents. Their expertise helps organizations comply with cybersecurity standards and protect sensitive data from cyber threats.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Fortinet engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Fortinet Engineer, you need a solid understanding of network security, firewall configuration, and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Fortinet products (such as FortiGate), experience using security information and event management (SIEM) systems, and certifications like NSE 4 or higher are highly valued. Strong analytical skills, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities help you address complex security issues and support clients or teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring robust network protection and efficient resolution of security challenges.

What are some common challenges faced by Fortinet engineers when managing large-scale network security deployments?

Fortinet Engineers working with large-scale network security deployments often encounter challenges such as integrating Fortinet solutions with existing heterogeneous network environments, maintaining consistent security policies across multiple locations, and ensuring high availability and minimal downtime during upgrades or troubleshooting. They must also stay current with frequent firmware updates and new threat intelligence to keep security measures effective. Strong collaboration with IT, network, and cybersecurity teams is essential to address these challenges efficiently while supporting business continuity.

Are you a seasoned IT professional looking to take your career to the next level? Do you thrive on solving complex technical challenges and making a real impact for the businesses you support? If so, we want to hear from you.
The Opportunity
At TeamLogic IT of San Ramon, we're not just looking for someone to fill a seat, we're looking for a technical leader who is passionate about IT, invested in continuous growth, and excited to make a meaningful difference for our clients every single day. As our Level 3 Senior IT Engineer, you'll be the highest technical escalation point on our service delivery team, working across a diverse portfolio of small and mid-sized business clients throughout the East Bay and Tri-Valley.
This is a role where no two days look the same. One day you might be architecting a cloud migration for a growing professional services firm; the next, you're mentoring a junior engineer through a complex network issue or presenting a technology roadmap to a client's executive team. If you're ready for that kind of challenge, and the recognition and compensation that comes with it, this is the right place for you
What You'll Do
In this role, you'll have the opportunity to:
- Be the go-to expert to own and resolve the most complex technical escalations that Level 1 and Level 2 engineers bring to you.
- Lead impactful projects by designing and delivering server migrations, cloud deployments (Microsoft 365, Azure, AWS), and network infrastructure upgrades.
- Protect your clients by implementing and managing cybersecurity solutions including EDR/MDR, SIEM, MFA, email security, and vulnerability management.
- Work with modern tools by administering Hyper-V, Windows Server, Active Directory, and M365 environments across a variety of client sites.
- Secure the network by managing and configuring firewalls, switches, routers, and VPN solutions (Cisco, SonicWALL, Fortinet, Meraki).
- Be a trusted advisor by conducting technology assessments and delivering written recommendations and strategic IT roadmaps to clients.
- Build business continuity by architecting and maintaining backup and disaster recovery solutions, both on-premise and in the cloud.
- Grow the team by mentoring and guiding Level 1 and Level 2 technicians and engineers, helping them develop their skills and confidence.
- Stay organized by documenting your work thoroughly in our PSA/RMM platforms.
What You Bring
To be successful in this role, you'll ideally bring the following experience and skills with you:
- 5+ years of progressive IT experience, including at least 2-3 years as a Level 3 / Senior Engineer at an MSP.
- Expert-level knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, and DHCP.
- Strong hands-on experience with virtualization: Microsoft Hyper-V and Azure Cloud.
- Solid proficiency with Microsoft 365 administration: Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, Azure AD/Entra ID, and Intune.
- Advanced networking skills: TCP/IP, VLANs, routing, switching, VPNs, and enterprise firewall management.
- Comfort working with enterprise networking equipment such as Cisco, Fortinet, SonicWALL, or Meraki.
- A solid grasp of cybersecurity fundamentals, NIST frameworks, and experience with security tools (EDR, MFA, SIEM).
- Hands-on experience with RMM, PSA, and site documentation platforms.
- Proven ability to manage IT projects from kickoff to completion; on time and within scope.
- Strong communication skills: you can explain a complex technical issue clearly to a non-technical client.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation; some client site visits will be required.
Additional (Preferred) Requirements
You'll stand out from the crowd if you also bring any of the following:
- Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Azure Solutions Architect, or M365 Enterprise Administrator.
- CompTIA Security+, Network+, or CASP+ certification.
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as HIPAA, CMMC, SOC 2, or PCI-DSS.
- Scripting and automation skills in PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Knowledge of the ITIL service management framework.
- Apple macOS administration experience in a business setting.
- A track record of building strong, long-term relationships with SMB clients.
Where You'll Work
You'll be based out of our San Ramon, CA office, with regular visits to client sites throughout the East Bay and Tri-Valley. Occasional but rare after-hours or weekend availability may be needed for critical incidents or planned maintenance windows; but we make sure you're supported if this needs to happen.
