Job description


BAE Systems, Space and Mission Systems (SMS) is looking for an experienced technical and strategic development manager to join the Military Space strategic development team. In this role you will support the Military Space P&L groups with strategy for identifying and developing needed technologies, capabilities, and partnership for future programs. The role requires both business and technology experience and a demonstrated ability to predict future needs and develop maturation plans involving IRAD and CRAD work. The Strategic Development team also works with the P&L groups to identify potential partners that can add discriminating capabilities to our mission architectures.
The Military Space Strategic Business Unit delivers innovative space systems that drive mission success and provide resilient and persistent mission-level solutions to deter threats and counter emerging capabilities for the Department of War.
What You'll Do:
  • Engage with Military Space mission area directors and other staff to assess strategic needs in out years (2+)
  • Work with Military Space leadership to create long range plans to develop needed technologies, execute relevant demonstrations, and advance TRL
  • Assess market conditions, trends, and new technologies that may be needed in the future and determine best courses to insert into Military Space roadmaps
  • Work with other BAE Systems sectors to determine potential technologies of use for Military Space
  • Engage with the business development teams to assess future bid strategies and needs
  • Work with the strategic development team to consolidate Military Space IRAD strategies and needs for all mission areas. Interact with SMS IRAD groups, monitor and assess IRAD execution
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the SBU, SCUs, and the greater company.
  • Create market and business assessments based on business unit strengths and industry trends to help align capabilities development with future business conditions.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site three or more days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between company campuses and other possible non-company locations may be required.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in an office environment, laboratory, cleanroom, or production floor.

Short Term Incentive: Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.
Required Skills and Education
  • BS/BA in related field plus 12 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active Top Secret security clearance is required with the ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret/SCI Polygraph.
  • Experience with program bid and proposal formulation, win strategies, and technical bid baseline development
  • Experience with Systems Engineering and mission architecture concepts
  • Experience with program execution and customer relations
  • Experience developing IRAD strategies and executing IRAD programs
  • Experience with government R&D customers, development of CRAD programs, and creation of multifaceted technology development planning to include IRAD, CRAD, and contracted programs
  • Experience negotiating commonality in technical approaches across funding programs for reuse and architecture advancement
  • Ability to coordinate activities for a team, predict and meet schedules, resolve disconnects.
  • Working knowledge of space systems including busses and EO/IR and RF payloads
  • Excellent communication skills are essential, including the ability to understand the customer's needs and provide clear communication of proposed solutions to both management and the customer.
