Job description

INDYCAR Rear End Mechanic / Performance Development

Prepare, assemble, inspect, and quality-control mechanical components of race cars prior to race and test events. Travel with the team to domestic and international race and test events to provide hands-on mechanical support under live competition conditions.

  • Assemble, install, adjust, and service suspension, drivetrain, braking, cooling, and chassis components according to detailed engineering setup specifications.
  • Ensure all assigned race car components are correctly installed, torqued, secured, and safety-wired in accordance with engineering drawings and safety protocols.
  • Perform rapid diagnostics, adjustments, and repairs during practice sessions, qualifying, and race events under uncompromising deadlines.
  • Disassemble, inspect, service, and clean race cars and components following each race and test event.
  • Maintain precise records for adjustable components, setup changes, part usage, and service intervals.
  • Prepare and organize a complete inventory of finished spare parts and assemblies required for race and test events.
  • Collaborate closely with engineers, crew chiefs, and manufacturing staff to implement setup changes and performance improvements.
  • Support pit lane and garage operations as required, including assisting during pit stops when assigned.
  • Ensure all vehicles, components, and equipment are prepared for safe transport to and from events.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety procedures and properly use protective equipment and specialized tools.
  • Provide structured, hands-on technical mentorship to junior and entry-level mechanics as an integral part of race car preparation and competition operations, ensuring that CGRโ€™s mechanical standards, safety protocols, and performance requirements are consistently met.
  • Apply advanced professional expertise to guide, oversee, and validate the work of less-experienced mechanics, particularly in the assembly, installation, and servicing of safety-critical and performance-sensitive components.
  • Lead by example in both the shop and at race events, demonstrating correct mechanical procedures, diagnostic methods, and execution under live competition conditions.
  • Assist Crew Chiefs and Team Managers in assessing the technical competency, progression, and readiness of new mechanics assigned to traveling race teams.
  • Translate complex engineering specifications and setup directives into practical, executable procedures for junior mechanics to ensure accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency.
  • Support the onboarding of new mechanics by providing hands-on, task-specific instruction directly tied to CGRโ€™s racing operations, rather than classroom-based or academic instruction.
  • Represent CGR and its sponsors professionally at all times, including during garage tours, pit tours, and sponsor engagements.
Job Requirements:
  • Experience as a senior level mechanic in the INDYCAR series and/or equivalent top-tier open wheel professional racing series.
  • Other experience must include:
    • Prior professional experience in the FIA Formula One World Championship (F1) environment, performing mechanical assembly, race preparation, or trackside competition duties for an F1 team.
    • Prior experience instructing, mentoring, or serving in a faculty or professional training capacity within a motorsports or automotive engineering program, applied in an operational (non-academic) setting.
    • Proficiency with precision measuring tools, torque procedures, and race car assembly equipment.
    • Experience working with IndyCar-specific mechanical systems, including suspension, drivetrain, braking systems, cooling systems, chassis assemblies, and safety-critical components.
  • Must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.
  • 70% of domestic and international travel required.
