Position Description
Job Title: Theology Teacher
Job Status: Full Time
FLSA: Exempt
Reporting Functions: Reports to the School Principal
Job Summary: The Theology Teacher actively instructs students, creates lesson plans, assigns and grades homework, manages students in the classroom, communicates with families, and helps students grow and understand their faith.
Duties and Responsibility:

• Be able to potentially teach at grade levels from Freshmen through Senior, both at a college prep level and an honors level.
  • Freshmen - Divine Revelation (Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition)
  • Sophomores - Christology and Ecclesiology
  • Juniors - Sacraments and Morality
  • Seniors - Catholic Social Teaching, Vocations, Apologetics, and Theology of the Body

• Preference for familiarity with Philosophy and Catholic Bioethics

• Provides academic subject instruction by preparing lesson plans, activities, projects, and assignments that empowers students to engage with course content intellectually, while also inviting students to journey deeper into a relationship with God.

• Demonstrates knowledge of the prescribed curriculum, current educational research, and technological tools to address student learning styles and achieve meaningful and measurable outcomes following the designed lesson plan.

• Actively establishes and maintains appropriate student supervision so that students have a safe, orderly, effective, and productive environment. Upholds Bethlehem Catholic High School's discipline procedures.

• Actively supervises students in hallways before, after, and between classes, in the cafeteria, in bus areas, and at special events, ensuring safety and security.

• Organizes daily class time so that instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time; develops weekly lessons with the appropriate instructional materials; provides appropriate, detailed instructions/plans for a substitute teacher in the event of absence.

• Maintains fair, accurate, and timely grading policies, procedures, and attendance.

• Regularly checks email and updates web pages as required through the technology system provided by the school. Grades papers, assignments, and assessments promptly and accurately.

• Communicate with students and parents regularly about schedules, assignments, events, and individual student needs. Meet with parents during parent-teacher conferences throughout the school year.

• Evaluate each student's progress in their Theological knowledge and lessons; keep appropriate records; prepare, administer, score, and record results of tests in evaluating student progress; prepare progress reports and report cards.

• Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters including social media and online platforms. Follow all Bethlehem Catholic High School and Allentown Diocese policies as per the teacher's handbook.

• Maintains and engages in professional growth, adheres to professional standards, and demonstrates professional ethics, sound judgment, and leadership. Cooperates and collaborates with other staff members in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.

• Attends all required in-service training meetings and workshops. Attends and participates in faculty meetings.

• Performs other duties assigned by the Principal.

Additional Conditions of Employment:
Candidate must be a practicing Catholic in good standing, have a deep knowledge of the Catholic faith, and agree to live by the tenets of the Catholic faith, including in lifestyle and on personal social media
Educational Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree in Catholic Theology required. Master's Degree in Catholic Theology/Catechetics/Campus Ministry or a related field preferred.

Other Requirements:

• Previous experience working with children. An understanding of child development and the skills necessary to relate to the students being taught.

• Must be a faithful, missionary disciple of our Lord Jesus Christ who is actively striving for holiness and has a deep, strong love for Christ and His Catholic Church.

• Must be an active, practicing Catholic who frequents the Sacraments and is active in his/her home parish. He/she must secure a Letter of Good Standing from the Pastor of his/her parish. If married, he/she must be married validly in the Church.

• Must be orthodox in his/her Catholicism, meaning that he/she must be faithful to all the Magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church with regards to faith and morals.

• Must be well-formed and possess a strong competency and knowledge of the Catholic faith as well as the Magisterial teachings of the Church.

• Posses a heart and passion for serving young people (high school students in particular) and a great desire to evangelize and catechize young people.
  • Ability to connect and relate with high school students - must be kind, charitable, merciful, compassionate, patient, personable, and approachable. Must possess a strong work ethic, healthy sense of humor, and active listening skills.

• Humble, energetic, creative, communicative, highly motivated, self-starter who takes initiative in the service of others. Should be innovative in finding ways to evangelize, catechize, serve, and engage high school students.

• A mature and professional team-player who is willing and able to collaborate with the Chaplain, Principal, Administrative team, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and students.

PRIOR TO INTERVIEW: Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (No less than 1 year old.) As well as attendance at the online Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and stoop. Must be able to talk and hear, both in person and by telephone. Use of hands to perform standard classroom duties and use office equipment is required. Reaching and lifting up to 10 pounds is also required. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by the means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
Working Conditions: Normal classroom setting, Full-time, contracted position; 7:35 am -2:45 pm. May be required to assist with special duties and work outside the normal school day to attend school-related events.
