How much do forensic jobs pay per year?
What is a forensic scientist?
What are the qualifications to get a forensic job?
The qualifications to get a job in this field vary by career. A crime scene investigator, evidence photographer, data analyst, accountant, computer expert, and medical examiner can all be considered forensic roles. Crime scene photographers are often police officers with some postsecondary education who have the skills to photograph evidence. Lab analysts typically have a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, chemistry, or a closely related field, although advanced degrees are available. Computer and accounting investigators (whose responsibilities are to analyze financial data or other digital evidence) should have a background in IT, statistics, or accounting. In addition to education and formal training, strong analytical thinking and an interest in criminal justice are important in this field.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a forensic scientist, and why are they important?
What are some common challenges faced by forensic professionals when working on criminal investigations?
What is the difference between Forensic vs Crime Scene Technician?
| Aspect | Forensic | Crime Scene Technician |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Forensic science degree, certifications in forensic analysis | High school diploma or associate degree, on-the-job training |
| Work Environment | Laboratories, crime labs, courtrooms | Crime scenes, outdoor and indoor locations |
| Employer & Industry | Law enforcement agencies, forensic labs | Police departments, crime scene units |
Forensic professionals typically hold specialized degrees and certifications, working mainly in labs and courtrooms. Crime Scene Technicians focus on collecting evidence at crime scenes, often with less formal education. Both roles are essential in criminal investigations but differ in work setting and qualifications.

What you'll do
In this in-house consulting role, your expertise and experience are required to:
Support our claims professionals, independent adjusters and customers by investigating losses to determine the origin and cause of fires and explosions as well as product, equipment and material failures. Conduct field investigations of structure fires and explosions, including vehicle fires or equipment failures, documenting your work and collecting all necessary evidence including witness interviews, fire service interviews, media reports, security videos, product recalls etc.
Analyze and identify the root cause of losses applying established fire investigation methodology and the scientific method detailing the steps and assumptions in your investigation that led you to your conclusion.
You will use your expertise to make decisions on (1) the most plausible reason for a failure based on data; (2) whether the design, installation or maintenance met industry standards or, if appropriate, building codes; (3) whether the loss was due to design error, manufacturing defect, improper maintenance or external factors.
Interact with customers to explain the investigation process, gather relevant information, coordinate site access, and communicate findings clearly and professionally without making coverage decisions.
Provide engineering opinions and technical assistance to Claims Professionals, leadership and other key stakeholders to support decision-making. This includes preparing reports and letters outlining your opinions in a clear, precise manner adapting to a non-technical audience.
