What is a forensic planner?

Forensic planners are professionals who analyze construction projects to determine the causes of delays, disruptions, or disputes. They use their expertise in project management, scheduling, and legal processes to investigate project timelines and identify factors that contributed to project overruns or claims. Forensic planners often work with lawyers, contractors, and project owners to provide expert opinions, prepare reports, and sometimes testify in court or arbitration. Their work is crucial in resolving construction-related disputes and preventing future issues.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a forensic planner?

To thrive as a Forensic Planner, you need strong analytical skills, a background in construction or engineering, and experience with project scheduling and delay analysis, often supported by a relevant degree or professional certification. Familiarity with scheduling software such as Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, as well as knowledge of forensic analysis methodologies, is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, critical thinking, and clear communication are vital soft skills for effectively interpreting and presenting complex project data. These competencies enable accurate assessment of project delays and disputes, ensuring objective resolution and successful project outcomes.

How does a forensic planner typically collaborate with legal teams during dispute resolution processes?

Forensic Planners work closely with legal teams by providing detailed analysis of project schedules and documentation to support dispute resolution. They prepare expert reports, attend meetings, and sometimes give testimony as expert witnesses. Effective communication and a clear presentation of complex scheduling data are crucial, as legal teams rely on their insights to understand delays, causation, and responsibility. This collaborative environment requires attention to detail, impartiality, and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-specialists.
