What is a forensic animator?

A Forensic Animator creates visual reconstructions of accidents, crimes, or other incidents to assist in investigations and legal proceedings. Using computer graphics and animation software, they develop 2D and 3D models based on forensic evidence, expert testimony, and official reports. These animations help attorneys, jurors, and investigators better understand complex events. Their work is often used in court cases, insurance claims, and law enforcement analysis.

What projects or cases does a forensic animator work on, and who do they collaborate with?

Forensic Animators often work on projects involving accident reconstructions, crime scene recreations, or simulations of hazardous events for use in legal proceedings. They collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies, attorneys, subject matter experts, and sometimes eyewitnesses to gather evidence and ensure the accuracy of visualizations. The role typically involves reviewing case files, conducting site visits, and integrating technical data into compelling visual narratives. Teamwork and clear communication are essential, as the goal is to create animations that are both scientifically accurate and easy for judges and juries to understand.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a forensic animator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Forensic Animator, you need expertise in 3D animation, computer graphics, and a solid grasp of physics or engineering principles, often supported by a degree in animation, digital media, or a related field. Familiarity with software such as Autodesk 3ds Max, Blender, and CAD programs, as well as certifications in animation or forensic science, are highly valuable. Strong attention to detail, analytical thinking, and excellent communication skills help convey complex information to both expert and non-expert audiences. These abilities are essential for accurately recreating incidents and effectively supporting investigations and legal proceedings.

How do you become a forensic animator?

To become a forensic animator, individuals typically need a background in animation, art, or computer graphics, along with knowledge of forensic science or criminal justice. Gaining skills in 3D modeling, animation software, and understanding legal procedures is essential, and some professionals pursue certifications or advanced degrees to enhance their qualifications.

How much do forensic animators make?

Forensic animators typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, education, and location. Senior professionals or those with specialized skills in 3D modeling and animation can earn higher salaries, often exceeding $100,000. Many work in law enforcement agencies, private firms, or consulting environments, often requiring proficiency with animation software and a background in forensic science or criminal justice.

Job description

The Role:
The Senior Managing Biomechanist leads a team of expert engineering staff in human-injury analysis in vehicular accidents, premises liability and slip-and-fall incidents. Analyses of injury biomechanics may require reconstructing vehicular accidents, slip-and-fall incidents or determination of factors responsible for development of the incident. This position requires extensive experience in forensic biomechanical analyses. This role performs investigations focusing on musculoskeletal biomechanics to determine the relationship between accident modes and injuries, requires evaluation and analysis of biomechanical systems including voluntary and involuntary human motions, assessment of situations leading to the accident, and reconstructing the accidents. The role ideally includes familiarity with legal depositions, working with attorneys and claims adjusters.
Additionally, the ideal candidate has an established network of external clientele and is experienced with building, establishing and maintaining rapport with this network.
This is a fully remote role open to candidates located anywhere in the United States. Candidates located in the listed states are encouraged to apply.
In This Role, You Will:
  • Lead a team of experts in conducting detailed inspections of vehicles and accident sites and accurately analyze crash sequences to identify contributing factors and the induced loading on the occupants.
  • Use computer models to reconstruct accidents and to measure load and injury levels.
  • Support business development efforts by building and maintaining rapport with current clients and generating new work for themselves and a team of experts supporting them.
  • Partner with business development representatives, attend conferences and events to promote the company and skills of expert staff.

  • Perform simulations of vehicular collisions using advanced collision reconstruction software such as PC-Crash, Virtual Crash or HVE (or similar).
  • Evaluate the effects of impact forces on occupants as a result of vehicular accidents.
  • Determine human injury mechanisms in vehicular accidents and premises liability cases such as slip-and-fall accidents.
  • Perform accident reconstructions of single-vehicle rollovers, single-vehicle impacts with fixed objects, and multi-vehicle collisions (frontal, side, rear, and sideswipe).
  • Utilize engineering principles to calculate factors such as impact and departure speeds, collision forces, and trajectories of vehicles.
  • Compare calculations with crash test reports of similar collisions to correlate damages based on calculated velocities.
  • Review papers and journals related to vehicular accident reconstruction to understand and advance the scientific techniques used in reconstruction work.
  • Provide written conclusions of findings to assist others in understanding the evidence or in determining the facts at issue.

What You Bring:
  • 10+ years of experience in biomechanics, accident reconstruction, and premises liability work or similar required.
  • Degree in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering required
