Job description

Job Description:

Boston.com is one of the most-read digital media outlets in the region. Each month, our stories reach millions of people, and we’re seeking a food writer to join our Community team.

We’re looking for a digital journalist with strong news judgment and a sharp editorial instinct to cover where (and what) people are eating and talking about. The role centers on fast-moving food news coverage, including restaurant openings and closings, industry shifts, and broader trends shaping the region’s dining scene.

The ideal candidate is a highly collaborative, versatile journalist whose work has created meaningful engagement and discussion in the digital sphere. Candidates with an entrepreneurial, data-informed mindset are highly encouraged to apply.

This role advances our core editorial mission: What Boston really cares about right now.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, report, and write timely, well-researched stories focused on food news, restaurant openings and closings, dining trends, and other developments in the regional food landscape. Work on assignments with equal enthusiasm.
  • Work collaboratively on a range of assignments and user-generated content, as well as independently develop original, reader-focused story ideas that serve our region.
  • Report and/or aggregate credible sources, meeting standards for verification and attribution.
  • Write copy with a meticulous attention to detail, accuracy, grammar, and team standards for style, framing, imagery, SEO, and social.
  • Conduct regular reader opinion polls, surveys, and quizzes. Analyze response data, identify trends, and quickly write follow-ups.
  • Contribute content for a food newsletter and develop platform-native social content, including posts and videos.
  • Consistently voice new ideas and solutions that strengthen our coverage, deepen audience engagement, and support ongoing experimentation across platforms.

Qualifications:

  • 2-4 years spent reporting and writing for a media outlet, preferably covering food/restaurants in the region.
  • Solid editorial judgment and the ability to write quickly and cleanly.
  • A track record of successful, audience-focused work.
  • A progressive understanding of the ways that readers engage with content on social, search, and mobile platforms.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.
