What is a food startup?

A food startup is a new and innovative company focused on creating, producing, or distributing food and beverage products or services. These startups often seek to solve challenges in the food industry, such as sustainability, health, convenience, or technology integration. Food startups can range from those developing plant-based alternatives, meal delivery services, food tech platforms, or unique packaged goods. They often leverage new trends and consumer demands to disrupt traditional food markets. Starting a food startup typically involves product development, market research, regulatory compliance, and building a strong brand.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a food startup?

To thrive in a Food Startup, you need a strong grasp of food safety regulations, product development, and basic business management, often supported by experience in the food industry or a related degree. Familiarity with tools like inventory management software, point-of-sale systems, and certifications such as ServSafe is highly beneficial. Creativity, resilience, and strong networking abilities set standout founders and team members apart. These skills are crucial for ensuring product quality, regulatory compliance, and sustainable business growth in a competitive market.

What are some common challenges faced when working in a food startup, and how can I prepare for them?

Working in a food startup often involves fast-paced environments with shifting priorities, limited resources, and multitasking across various roles. You may face challenges like adapting to rapid changes in product direction, tight deadlines, or meeting strict food safety regulations. Being flexible, open to learning, and proactive in problem-solving will help you thrive. Collaborating closely with a small, passionate team is common, so strong communication skills are essential for success.

With Barn2Door Farmers can sell and market directly to consumer and wholesale Buyers, while seamlessly managing inventory, orders, fulfillment and finances.

We are looking for people passionate about the intersection of local Food, Farming and Technology. In this role as an Account Executive, you'll be speaking with Farmers everyday. We have a strong inbound marketing engine that is driving demand for Barn2Door's solutions, and benefiting from a transition in the market (as Farmers move online). In this high velocity sales role, you will be on the phone or in video-based meetings to qualify and close new deals and run a full sales cycle each month.

We only work with Farmers who employ sustainable practice, so you'll be responsible for qualifying and closing new Farmers that are best suited for Barn2Door's solutions. You'll be accountable for acquiring Farms in designated territories by connecting with prospects, delivering product demonstrations, resolving objections and closing new accounts.

You should be a "hunter", innately competitive, comfortable and articulate as a presenter, accountable to ongoing metrics for Sales outcomes, and eager to become fluent in the local food and agriculture scene. With your pulse on the market, you'll be expected to provide feedback internally to the Marketing, Success and Product teams (about opportunities and challenges).

  • Process oriented - able to follow and track protocol, a superstar at following up
  • You love learning technology; you handle details accurately and in a timely manner
  • Your communication skills are top-notch, both over the phone and in email
  • Comfortable working in an entrepreneurial environment

You Have:

  • Demonstrable experience of meeting and exceeding goals and objectives
  • The ability to work independently and collaborate in a team environment
  • Desire to work in a startup environment, comfortable in ambiguous situations
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Eagerness to build a career in technology
  • Preferred farm food or farming domain knowledge

You Will:

  • Build a pipeline of prospects and manage the sales stages from initiate to close
  • Generate a list of prospective farms through research, emails, phone calls, and events
  • Meet and exceed farm subscription goals and overall sales team objectives
  • Educate prospects about Barn2Door's solutions through your presentations
  • Clearly articulate Barn2Door's value proposition and return on investment

Training:

We are big advocates of training and ongoing professional growth. In this position, an Account Executive will require ongoing training and domain knowledge to effectively communicate the nuances of our solution and to navigate questions and closing. Your training will include product orientation, messaging, role-playing, objection handling, and ongoing self-critiques of customer calls and meetings. Training will prepare you with the requisite knowledge to:

  • Give you a deep understanding of the Barn2Door solution
  • Answer questions regarding core product features and functions
  • Engage in authentic and meaningful conversations with prospects
  • Highlight the differentiation of our solution in contrast to the competition
  • Showcase your work habits, attention to detail, attitude and initiative

You Get:

  • Incentive Stock Options (ISOs) purchase stock in a high-growth startup
  • 10 days PTO, 5 days Sick Leave and 11 Paid Holidays (5 weeks paid time off)
